TO'ALL WHOM vI'l MAY CONCERN: l I
Be it known that I, THOMAS McMULLIN, of Osgood, in the county of Ripley, and State oi' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Coupling-Belts; and I do hereby declare that the following is al full, clear,'and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters I of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specication, in which-4 Figure 1 represents a view'in perspective of a belt with my improve-d coupling attached.
Figures Zand' 3 are Vviews'in perspective of the coupling detached, and Figure 4' a section, on anrenlarged scale, oi' the coupling as connected for operation. lThe o bject of my invention is to pr-ovide a simplev and ecient eouplingfor belts, whereby the labor and v loss of time involved in lacing are obviated, and the belts can bevtightened or slackened as desired, without cutting them, to which end my improvements lconsist in ,attaching to each end of the belt a plate `on which an eccentric-rolleris pivoted, having grooves formed in it immediately above prongs upon the plate, the endoi` the g belt being clamped between theV grooves and prongs when the roller is rotated, so as to press upon it, theV plates being connected by4 suitable hooks'and slots.v l
In the Vaecompar'iying drawings, A A represent plates, which are to beattaehed to the ends'of a belt to be coupled. Rollers, a, are mounted eccentrically'in lugs a formed upon the plates A', having V-shaped grooves,
Z, cut in them, said `grooves being made in that part of their peripheries which is furthest from their centres of rotation, or, inother words, at right angles to theirradii of eccentricity.. Pointed prongs, c, are secured to the plates A A', immediatelybeneath the centro lines of 'the rollers a. Plates or levers, d, are secured' to the rollers a, opposite to the grooves b, by means of which they can be turned. The plateA is provided with hooks, e, which engage in slots, e', in the plate A', by means of which the two plates are connected after they have been clamped to the belt. B represents the belt. v l
The operation of the device is as follows: The rollers a being turned by the plates CZ -until the grooves b are uppermost,'the plates A A are slipped upon the ends of the belt to be coupled, the-end of the belt passing over the prongs c and beneath the roller a.
The rollers are then rotated, by means ofthe plates d, until they clamp the ends'ot' the belt between their 4grooves b and the prongs c, by reason of being mounted cceentr-ieallyin theirV bearings. The plates A A( are then connected by the'hooks e and slots i It will be seen that my improvement furnishes a simple and durable coupling, which will enable the beltto be readily tightened or slackened as desired, wit-hout the labor and'loss of time involved in lacing, and without requiring the belt to be eut.
What I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
prongs c, when arranged and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature `in presence of two witnesses.
i y THOS. MCMULLIN. Witnesses:
MILES MENDENIIALL, Jr.,l THOMAS GAIN.
