Be it known that I, JOSEPH HErNrscH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, am the inventor of certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of signallamps having a lamp-body with diverging top, bottom, and side portions and provided with a supporting-ring encircling the bottom of the lamp-body, such ring having an integral iiange portion adapted to form a protecting and supporting base.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, and eflicient signal-lamp.
A further object is to provide a signallamp with a sup orting-ring having an integral depending ange adapted to form a protecting and supporting base.
A still further object is to provide a lamp having a supporting-ring and flanged base with an oil-cup mounted entirely above the bottom of the protecting-ring and provided with means for securing it removably in position. l
Other and further objectsof the invention will appear from an examination of the drawings and the following description and claim.
The invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp constructed in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2, a sectional view in elevation of the lower portion of my improved lamp, showing the supporting-ring with its integral fiange and a central sectional elevation of one-half of the oil-cup mounted removably entirely above the bottom of such supporting flanged ring; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of my improved fianged supporting-ring.
f In constructing a lamp in accordance with my improvements I provide a lamp-body a, having a lower cylindrical portion b, an upper cylindrical portion b, and diverging side portions c, such lamp being provided with suitable lenses d, a flue e, a hood f, and bail g, all of which may be of any ordinary and wellknown construction.
In order to provide means for supporting the lamp and protecting the lower portion thereof, a metallic supporting-ring h is prolugs t', provided with perforations j, and having an integral depending flange portion k, extending downward and outward at an incline from the main body portion of the supporting-ring to a point below the lower edge of the lamp-body, so as to entirely encircle the lower edge of the lamp-body and protect it, and also form a supporting member and protecting base when the lamp is in operative position upon asignaling device and also when resting upon its base.
An oil-cup Z, having a bottom m and side portions n, such side portions extending beow the bottom of the oil-cup and being provided with an outwardly-extending annular flange o, is mounted in the lower portion of the lamp-body, withy the iiange 0 in engagement with the lower edge of the lamp-body, and thelower edge p of the side portions of the oil-cup being above the bottom edge of vided having upwardly-extending integral' the supporting-ring flange 7C, already del scribed. `Spring catches g are secured to the side of the oil-cup by means of rivets 1, such catches being provided with outwardlyprojecting shoulder portions s in engagement with an inwardly-extending flange t, formed by turning up the lower edge of the lampbody. These catches are formed of spring metal and extend through perforations u in the side portions of the oil-cup below the bottom thereof, the lower ends of such catches being on the inside of the depending side portions of the oil-cup and below the bottom thereof. The spring-catches for holding the oil-cup removably in position are thus on the outside of the bottom of the cup and readily accessiblefor inserting and removing the cup, the bottom ends of the catches and the cupbottom being above the bottom of the supporting and protecting flange portion c of the supporting-ring h, already described. It will be seen that both the catches and the cupbottom are well protected.
The integral flange portion of the supporting-ring also forms an annular opening between such flange and the cylindrical bottom portion of the lamp-body, permitting the inwardly-curved side iange 0 of the oil-cup to extend upward around the outside of the lower edge of the lamp-body and between it and such protecting-fiange. By this means the bottom portion of the oil-cup, with its securing-flange and its securing-catches, and also the edge of the bottom cylindrical portion of the lamp-body are all protected by the ICO IIO
lange portion of the supporting-ring, and an efficient base for the lamp is thus provided. Both sides of the cup are of course identical. Only one-half thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this being sufficient to enable those Skilled in the art to construct the same.
When the lamp is'to be used upon a signaling device, which may be of any ordinary and well-known type, vertical supporting-sockets o are secured to the supporting-ring by means of an open ring w, having a concaved inner surface portion adapted to engage the outer surface portion of the supportingring h, already described, such open ring being provided with suitable mechanism, such as a bolt and nut y, for securing it removably in position upon the supporting-ring. The supporting-ring h is secured to the lampbody by means of rivets e, and an eflicient supporting mechanism for the lamp is thus ail'orded.
I claim y In a lamp of the class described, the combination o1c a tubular lamp-body, a separate metallic thickened strengthening-ring secured to the lower portion of the lamp-body said ring provided with an integral solid flaring annular flange on its lower edge eX- tending below the lower edge of the lampbody and with integral upwardly-extending erforated lugs on its upper edge, and means l'or securing the lugs to the lamp-body.
