UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. ROLFES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TOIHANDLAN-BUOK MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed April 13, 1908. Serial No. 426,740.
' siding in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Base-Ring and Bracket for Signal- Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a base ring and bracket for signal lamps used in railway service and it has for its object the construction of a device of this character, whichis simple in nature and affords a. high degree of protection to the lower end of a signal lamp to prevent injury to the shell.
Figure I is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section of a signal lamp having my ring and bracket applied thereto. Fig. 11 is a cross section taken on irregular line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical cross section taken online III'III, Fig. II.
In the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the shell of a signal lamp, and 2 is the bottom within said shell that is located above the lower edge of the shell, as usual, thereby leaving the downwardly projecting shell extension 3 which is the part to which my base ring is applied for protection of the lamp shell. I
4 designates a stiffener band that surrounds the shell extension 3 and is connected thereto by rivets 5 or other suitable means to increase the rigidity of the lower end of the shell. a
6 designates a base ring that is provided with a bracket arm 7. This base ring has a thickened lower portion which is located beneath the bottom edges of the shell extension 3 and the stiffener band 1, and at the upper end of which is a shoulder 8 upon which the lower edges of said members rest. The base ring also has an upper annular neck member 9 that extends upwardly from the shoulder 8 of its thickened lower portion and fits loosely within the shell extension 3, so as to be susceptible of turning therein, or in other Words, to provide for the lamp being 'sion, substantially as turned upon the base ring for desired adj ustment. The base ring is provided with a cross bar 10 by which the ring is rotatably held to the lamp shell, the connection of said cross bar to the shell being furnished by a pivot bolt 11 that extends through the center of the shell bottom 2 and the cross bar, as seen in Figs. II and III.
The base ring 6 fitted to the lamp shell as described, affords a very high degree of protection for the bottom of the lamp shell, inasmuch as the thickened lower portion of the ring is located immediately beneath the bottom extension of the shell and the stiffener band 4, and therefore furnishes a direct end bearing for said parts.
In order that the lamp may be held in any position to which it is adjusted upon the base ring, I provide a spring latch 12 that is securedat one end to the stiffener band 4 and the free end of which is confined within a keeper 13 carried by said band. The latch is provided with a catch pin 14 that passes through perforations in the stiffener band and the shell extension 3, andis adapted to enter into any one of a plurality of perforations 9 in the neck 9 of the base ring, when the lamp is turned upon the base ring.
I claim:
1. The combination with a lamp of the character described having a shell provided with a bottom and an extension projecting downwardly from said bottom, of a base ring having a thickened lower portion located beneath said extension, and an upper annular neck member fitted within said shell extension, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a lamp of the character described having a bottom and an extension projecting downwardly from said bottom, of a stiffener band secured to said extension, and a base ring having a thickened lower portion located beneath said extension and stiffener band, and an upper annular neck member fitted within said extenset forth. GEO. H. ROLFES. In presence of BLANCHE HOGAN, LILY RosT.
