SIGNAL-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,562, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed August 11, 1897. Serial No. 647,883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DRESSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Signal-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to the construction and arrangement of lamps or lanterns employed upon railroads, and has for its object the provision of a strong and durable lamp.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 isa side elevation of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is avertical axial sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view at line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation, and Fig. 5 a side elevation, of the hinge employed at the top of the lamp.
Similar numerals of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is the body of the lamp, made of sheetsieel or the equivalent and screw-threaded a 2 3.
4 is a base piece, made of cast material, preferably malleable iron, and screw-threaded at 5 to engage with the thread 2.
6 is a foot secured to the base-piece 4 by rivets 7.
8 is a cast-metal top screw-threaded at 9 to engage with the thread 3 upon the body 1. When screwed home, the parts 4. and 8 are held against unscrewing by means of screws or pins 10. The top piece 8 is thickened at At 13 a bead is formed within the top piece 8, designed to receive and hold in place a flaring deflector 14., which is formed with a hollow bead 130 at its larger end, adapted to fit over the bead 13.
15 are ventilator-openings through the wall of a ring 16 formed integral With the top piece 8.
17 is a cap carried by a deflecting-ring 18, hinged to the ring 16 at 19, the hinge employed being of peculiar construction, to be hereinafter described.
When closed, the top of the lamp is held against displacement by the spring-catch 4.4:.
The body 1 of the lamp is perforated at 20 to supply air for the support of combustion.
21 is a double-flanged ring perforated at 22 for the admission of air to the interior of the lamp, such air being deflected downward as it enters the perforations 20. The lower flange 23 of the ring 21 extends outward such a dis tanoe as to pass between the lower edge of the body 1 and the basepiece 4:, between which it is firmly held when the parts are se cured together. The upper flange 24: fits snugly against the interior of the lamp, above the perforations 20 in lamp-body.
25 is an upper deflecting-ring having a flange 26, which extends between the upper edge of the body 1 and the top piece 8.
27 are perforations in the body 1, located above the lower edge of the ring 25.
28 are goggles formed of a single piece of metal and arranged to receive lenses. These goggles enter openings 29 in the body 1 and are firmly held in place by turning over the inner edge, as at 30, the bead 31 around the goggle preventing its entering the body too far.
At one side of the body 1 a square opening is formed, and thereover, at the exterior of the body, is secured, by means of rivets 32, a frame 33, having at the top a cross-piece 35, which fits snugly against the body 1 and is provided with an outwardly-projecting bead 36. The sides 37 and bottom 38 of the frame are bent outward, so as to form a slideway for the door 39, which bears one of the goggles 28. This door at the bottom and sides is provided with a return-bend 40, which not only holds the door snugly in place, but pre- Vents the admission'of water, snow, &c., to the interior of the lamp. A bead 4.1 is formed in the top rail of the door. This bead fits over the bead 36 when the door is closed, excluding rain, 850. Fixed to the door near the bottom thereof are arms 42, arranged to pass beneath spring-arms 4L3, fixed above the dooropening, within the lamp, holding the door in an elevated position when raised.
The hinge heretofore referred to is composed of two parts or sections of malleable venting injury to the iron or the equivalent. The part 45 is provided with a cross-bar 46 and two outwardlyprojecting brackets 47. The part 1-8 has a tongue 49, arranged for securing around the bar 46. When thus constructed, the top of the lamp may be thrown back, the brackets 47 receiving the upper portion of the hinge, supporting the top away from the lamp, pretop and supporting it while open. 7
A lamp constructed in accordance with the foregoing description will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which itis intended,being effective, stron g, and very durable.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lamp, the combination with a body, and a part secured to and closing one end thereof, the body and such part being united by a screw-threaded connection, of a flanged deflector, the flange of the deflector being arranged between the aforesaid parts and held, whereby the deflector is held in place when the said parts are screwed together, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lamp, the combination with the body of the lamp and a bottom piece adapted to be screwed thereon, of a double-flanged, perforated deflecting-ring, one flange of which is adapted to pass between the body and the bottom piece and be held thereby, substantially as set forth.
In a lamp, the combination with the body of the lamp perforated near its upper end and a top piece adapted to be screwed thereon, of a flanged deflecting ring, the flange of which is adapted to pass between the body and the top piece and be held thereby, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with an opening in the side of the lamp-body, of a frame outside of the opening, said frame being formed with a reverse bend at the bottom and sides, and a bead at the top, of a door, arranged to slide beneath said frame, the edges and bottom of the door being formed with a reverse bend, as shown, and the top with a bead, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination with the sliding door, of the arms near the bottom thereof, and the spring-arms fixed within the lamp-body, near the top of the door, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a lamp of the character herein specified, a cast-metal top piece having a perforated ring formed at its upper portion; a cone 14 held in place therein by a bead; a top hinged at one side of the said ring, and a spring-catch located within the ring at the other side, the whole combined and arranged, substantially as shown and described.
