APPLIUATION FILED Nov. 18, 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented April 4, 1905.
JOHN P. ZENNER, OF CHCAGO, ILLINOIS.
STEAM-EXHAUST HEAD. 1
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 736,707, dated April. 4, 1905. Application tiled November 18, 1904:. Serial No. 233,286.
To @ZZ whom, it 'may cori/cern:
Be it known that l, J onN P. ZENNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Exhaust Heads, lof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to steam exhaust heads; and its object is to prolong the life of the same by adopting a construction that minimizes the rusting and corrosion of the shell at the bottom thereof and articularly in the seams, where, considering t e weight of the entire superstructure of the device is sustained thereby, corrosion should be avoided to the utmost extent. This l accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section of a steam-exhaust head embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the lower defleetor, taken on dotted line 3 3, Fig. l.
Reference being had to the drawings, A represents the inverted-truncated-cone-shaped lower portion of the sides of my improved steam-exhaust head, and B represents the upper cylindrical portion thereof, whose lower edges are riveted or otherwise secured to the upper edges of said lower portion. The top of this shell A B is closed by a suitable head C,
whose outer upwardly-flanged edges are riv-.
eted or otherwise suitably secured to the inner circumference of the upper end of part B of the shell and which is concaved and provided with a discharge-opening, which latter has a tapered exit-pipe D, secured to and depending from its edges into the exhaust-head a suitable distance.
The lower edges of the lower portion A of the shell are seated within and secured to the upwardly-flanged edges a of a cast-metal bottom plate E, which latter has an integral central tubular boss F therein, into the shorter downwardly extending interiorly screwthreaded portion of which the steam-exhaust pipe G is screwed. The horizontal lower portion of this bottom plate E between the outer flanges a and the tubular boss F is made quit-e wide, so as to allow a greater circuinference for the attachment of the sheet-metal upper portion of thc head. By enlarging this radius of the plate the head itself is held steadier and the liability of the same working loose of its rivets is obviated. The portion of the boss F extending above the bottom plate up into thc exhaust-head is longer than the lower portion thereof. At a suitable point at one side of the boss F the bottom plate is provided with a suitable drip-opening and has an integral drip-stub projecting in a downward and outward direction therefrom, the lower portion of which is interiorly screw-threaded and has a suitable drip-pipe H screwed into its lower end.
Secured to and suspended centrally from the upper portion B of the shell by means of suitable straps c, so that its upper edge is about in the same horizontal plane as the seam uniting the upper and lower portion of the shell, is an inverted-cone-shaped de'llector l, the inverted apex of which is above and in alinement with the center of the boss F of the bottom plate E. Adjacent to the inverted apex of this deflector l the sides thereof are provided with two diametrically opposite openings which have secured to and depending down from the edges thereof downwardly and outwardly depending tapered drain-pipes d d, substantially as shown. ln view of the seams made necessary at the crotch of the drain-pipes (l CZ and the apex of the deflector l, l prefer to protect the saine from the direct action of the exhaust-steam by a protector-plate J, one end of which is secured to the one side of the deflcctor and then extends down under the apex of the deflector and between the drain-pipes and has its opposite end secured to the opposite side of the deflector. This protector-plate J is useful in preventing the rusting out of the deilector at the crotch of the drain-pipes (Z d, and thus permitting the leakage from the deiiector ofthe liquids of condensation direct into the mouth of the steam-exhaust pipe.
The upper edges c of the deflcctor l are preferably flanged outward, and within the circumference of these upper'llanged edges is IOO e cylindrical buffle-plate or ring K, whose lower edges sit down in the delleetor l u short distance und are secured in place hy being,` riveted to the upturned endj'of the straps c, substantially :is shown. The lower ed ges of the buffle-plate l ure not in contact with the dellector l, hut ure ruised u short distance lshove the sume about the thickness of the straps und the upper edges 7c of this liefheplute ure preferably slightly curved or flared ou twu` rd.
ln. operation the steam expelled from the exhaust-pipe (l into the exhaust-head first comes in contact with the protector-plate J, the drain d, sind the dellector l und is deprived of :t portion of its moisture by the condenszitimi thereof. ',he stezun con tinuing its upward course is cmised to multe u downward und outwu rd evolution against 'the lower side portion of lthe shell by the llunged edges e of the dellector und then passes up hetweex'i the seid lhrnged. edges :uid the shell into un. :inuuhu' chmuber hetween seid shell end the hullle-phite l. lfrom this chuniher the steum passes up over the upper edges of the plete l.. und downward into the space hetween it und the exit-pipe l) und into the delector l und then enters the exit-pipe D (which is tapered so us to prevent the hitch pressure of the stez'un) und issues into the open atmosphere in u condition in which it will be pructicollf,r relieved of its moisture Iend liquids held in suspension which it pos- ;-ecessed us it issued from the exhaust-pipe lhis condensation, &c., which took place within the exhaust-heed, gr vitutes down the sides ofthe shell, through und from the drainpipes d d, into the bottom pluto, und is curried off through the drip-pipe ll. The hottoi'n plate E boingT mudo of one piece of motel is not affected h v the moisture which contin'usllj,T effects the sume, which heretofore luis cuused the bottom of the exhaustheud to corrode rat the seuins und leek und has greatly reduced the period of usefulness thereof.
lflhst l claim as new is l. ln stcem-e-:heust houd, the combinetion th the exterior shell. thereof, und :i centrelly-perforeted top therefor, of en inverted-- cone-shaped dellector mounted between said top plete und the bottom of the shell, u llouting annuler buffle-pluto suspended inediete seid top plete und defh-ictor, and u cast-metal bottoni pluto to which the lower edges of the shell are secured huving en opening therein for the stemn-exhziust pipe und e drip-opening therein between seid exhaust-pipe and i outer cireuinference.
