Description

@uitrit .faire @anni @Hirn FRANCIS H. HAWKS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent'No. 81,366, dated August 25, 1868.
dige Stimuli referti; tu in lgese rttms ntmt :mh mrkug mi nf tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. HAWKS, of the city and county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Mode of Attaching Extra or Double Soles to Boots and Shoes ;k and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The natureof my. invention consists in attaching an extra or water-proof sole to boots and shoesiu such a manner that it can be removed and replaced at pleasure.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which `the same is constructed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.'
Extra half soles and heel-taps, manufactured of India. rubber, or any other water-proof or durable material, are secured to the bottom of any ordinarily-constructed boot or shoe in the following manner:
The half soles and heel-taps to`be secured are punctured near the rims with holes, at any desired intervals, for the admission of screws, by which the extra or water-proof soles are attached totlie ordinary boot or shoe.
i These screws are passed through the perforated centre of a thin circular plate or washer of copper or other metal, and this plate or washer, when the screw is inserted therein, rests against the base of the head of the screw, and prevents the rubber or other water-prooi` material from closing over and embedding the screw-head. Instead of this washer, eyelets of metal, constructed with a broad outer rim, may be used. These eyelets may be inserted in the half soles or heel-taps to be attached, and the screws then passed through them into the soles of the boots or shoes. When the screws are fully inserted, their heads will rest upon the broad rim of the eyelet.
By removing these screws, the half soles and heel-taps secured thereby may be detached, and new ones substituted.
Figure lf, in the accompanying drawings, is aview of the exterior surface of the half sole and heel-tap att-ached to an ordinary boot or shoe by my method. i i
Figure 2 represents the head of screw, Vtogether with the washer or cyelet, letters A. being the head of the screw, and letters B the washer or rim of eyelet, on which the head of said screw rests. f
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The new application and use of screws, together' with washers or eyelets, as herein described, for the pur-- pose of attaching water proof half soles and hceltaps to boots and shoes.
i FRANCIS H. HAWKS.
