BARREL-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
Application filed May 4. 1905. Serial No. 258.758.
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OoNsrANoE A. RIEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermann, in the county of Gasconade and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Stands, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to barrel-stands and to that particular class adapted to be used as a truck for moving the barrels from one place to another.
The object of my invention is to provide a stand of the class described simple in con struction, yet adapted to support a barrel near a horizontal or an upright position, as desired.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion,
size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my barrel-stand arranged to hold a barrel in a horizontal position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same arranged to hold a barrel in an upright position.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout both views, 1 is an axle provided with wheels 2. Mounted on axle 1 is a supporting member comprising uprights 3, connected at the top by a bowed portion 4. This supporting member is preferably made of sheet-steel bent to form the parts 3 and 4, which are given additional strength by bending the edges at substantially right angles to the body portion.
The barrel-engaging member is made in two sections constructed of Ushaped irons 5 and 6, having secured to the curved portion thereof rods 7 and 8. I prefer to make one of these irons larger than the other and to curve its surface to conform to the curve in the bowed portion 4 of the support. Rod 7 is provided with a slot 9, in which bolt 10, carried by rod 8, is adapted to slide. A nut 11, having a projection thereon, is secured to the end of bolt 10 for the purpose of holding rods 7 and 8 in position. The ends of the U- shaped irons 5 and 6 are bent to form hooks 12 and 18, (shown inFig. 1,) which are adapted to engage the top and bottom edges of a barrel, the slotted rod 7 permitting the necessary adjustment for barrels of different heights.
To the ends of iron 5 are secured the ends of a U-shaped bottom-engaging member 14, which is bent to form an approximate right angle with iron 5 at a point adjacent the ends thereof. This member 14 is provided with cross-pieces 15 and 16, to which a support 17, having three arms 18, 19, and 20, is secured when the stand is arranged to hold the barrel in an upright position. (Shown in Fig. 2.) When in such position, the curved end of member 14 is secured to a bowed portion 4 by three bolts, and a brace 21 extends from axle 1 to arm 20 to add rigidity to the stand. When it is desired to change the stand from an upright to a horizontally supporting stand, the three bolts which secure member 14 to the bolt portion and a similar number which secure arms 18, 19, and 20 to the crosspieces are removed and the curved part of iron 5 is bolted to the bowed portion 4, a brace 21 to rod 7, and arms 18, 19, and 20 to the two ends and curved portion, respectively, of iron 6.
The device above described is inexpensive and thoroughly practical, and the simplicity of its parts enables the change from a horizontally to a vertically supporting stand to be made easily and quickly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A barrel-stand, having a support for a side of a barrel mounted therein, said support comprising a plurality of adjustable sections, hooks carried by the outer ends of said sections to engage the chime at the opposite ends of the barrel and means at an approximately right angle to the first-named support for engaging and supporting one end of the said barrel. I
2. A barrel-stand, having a support for the side of a barrel mounted therein, comprising a plurality of U-shaped sections adjustably secured together and a U-shaped section rigidly secured to the free ends of one of the U shaped sections, at an approximately right angle thereto.
3. A barrel-stand, having a support for the to the side support or to the end support and a supplemental supporting frame or brace adapted to be secured at the option of the user to one end of either the side support or the end support. I5 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
