Referring now to the'drawings, 1 represents our retort, which, as shown, is of a rectangular flat box-like form of sheet metal.

The retort, as shown, is composed of the two side plates and the edge plates 4, 5, 6, andi, which. form a thin narrow retort, and, as shown, the same is supportedon edge atv its opposite diagonallyerranged corners 8 and 9 by means of vertical standards 10 and 11, which are of such a length that the lower corner is supported above the base 13 for the purpose hereinafter described.

The retort, as heretofore described, is made of heavy sheet rectal and is made per- I fectly'tight, so as to retain the steam-pres sure to which it is subjected and which is not very, heavy pressure. Passing transversely through the retort from the side plate 2 to Specification of Letters Patent.

the side plate 3 is a bolt 4", which prevents the enlarged side plates from spreading or bulging, outward under the pressure to which they are subjected.

The edge plate 5 adjacent the upper corner 15 is provided with a cut-away portion extending entirely across the same and forming a charging-opening irito which the wood isfed-to the retort. The said opening is closed by a door 16, which is hin ed at 17, and is provided at its outer endwit an o ening through which a bolt 18 passes, said olt bein carried by the side plate 4 and thus the door is firmly held closed by ineans of a nut 19, screwed on said bolt on the outside of the door. and held closed by the bolt 22 and nut 23 in the same manner as the charging-door, and is provided with a packing to form the steam tight joint the same as the charging door.

@ur retort is heated by steam, and in order to fully accomplish this We provide coils 24 and 25, carried by each side 2 and 3. ofthe-rctort and supported thereby by the brackets 26. The said coils, as will be clearly seen, are arranged parallel with the sides and adj acent thereto, leaving the central space 27 through the retort and in? which the wood to be distilled is laced. The lower ends of said pipes of which the coils 24 and 25 are com-, posed extend outwardly through the side 2 of the retort adjacent its lower end, and said communication with a plypipes for the coils is a pipe 31, which ex- I tends inwardly within the retort and has its inner end in communication. therewith and which is adapted to su pl the live steam to the retort to aid in tide distillation of the wood.

The upper end of the retort has m'communication therewith a vaporconveying pipe 32, which extends upwardly and is rovided with a puppet-valve 32, normally he (1 closed, but adapted to be opened by the pressure in 5 the retort. The said pipe is proi ided with a pipe 33, which is adapted to convey the comlned steam and vapor from the wood to the condenser, Whercimthcy are condensed and separated. The said pipe extends downward and communicates with a tank 34, which is partially filled'with water, and said pipe extends adjacent the bottom of the tank, so that as the vapor passes in o the tank it is cooled, and the )roducts from the wood be ing lighter than t 9 water they will rise to the top of the tank and can be otherwise separated.

In order to aid in the condensation of the vapor, we provide a water-supply pipe 35,

which has a pump 36 in communication therewith, andsaid pipe intersects the pipe 33, whereby the vapor is engaged by a strong stream of cold watenand said water-supply pipe leads to a tank 37, into which the wa- 2 5 ter is dischar ed, said water carrying with it a 'portion of the condensed steam and vapor from the wood, and thus the products from the wood will rise to the top of the tank 37 the.

The pipe 32 below the valve 30 has a pipe 38 in communication therewith, and the up or end of the pipe 38 carries a steam-gage to indicate the steam-pressure within the retort. By the structure herein shown it will be 3 5 seen that the wood being placed in the upper end of the retort fills the space 27 between the coils, and the byproducts are abstracted from the wood through the medium of the steam heat from the coils and direct steam wpressure withinthe retort. When it is desired to employ theretort, the lowerdoor 20 is o ened and b V the inclination of the side e ges 6 and 7 it will be readily seen that the wood by force of gravity will slide down the same and pass from the discharge-opening.

3. An apparatus oi the character described,

comprising 'a rectangular retort having its diagonally opposite corners mounted in standards m a horizontal lane, steam-coils vertically disposed within the retort adjacent the vertically-disposed sides and forming a central space between the same for the reception of the wood to be distilled, a steamsupply pipe in direct communication with said retort, a discharge pipe in communication with theuppcr end of said retort, a puppetvalve within said pipe, and charging and discharging doors carriedby the diagonally opposite upper and lower corners.
