WILLIAM D. FLEMING, GF ".:EASJT DOVNINGTOYN, PENNSYLVANIA.
AIR-HEATER.
VTo all whom 'it may concern Be it lcnownthat I, lViLLniir D. FLEMiN-G, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Downingt'own, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Heaters, of which the following' is a specification.
The invention relates to an air heater for use in connection with stoves and in the use of which the air deliveredfrom the points above and beyond the stove and the fuel bed is heated to a considerable degree prior to reaching the ignition point.
The main objectvof the present invention is the usel of the air heater .hereinafter termed a preheater, which is so arranged as to be entirely surrounded by a fla-me of the fire and is interiorly formed to compel a tortuous travel of the air current to insure an eiiicieiit heating thei'eof prior to delivery.
A further object of the present invention .is the provis-ion of a preheater which is suspended from the stove top in a manner to avoid any interference whatever with the usual use and function of the stove lids, the preheater being connected to the stove top by a single connection which in itself serves as an inlet to the preheater.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following speciication, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure 1 isa plan illustrating the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on line 2%?, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig'. t is a. perspective view of the base of the preheater.
The improved preheater comprises what I term a base l including an approximately rectangular plate 2 having an edge wall 3 rising therefrom, said edge wall being coextensive with the contour of the plate. The upper surface of the plate 2 within the edge wall 3 is through the medium of what may be termed partition walls 4 divided to provide a central chamber 6 and the tortuous passage 7 extending from the central chamber and terminating in outlet passage 8 eX- tending longitudinally of and adjacent one side of the edge wall 3. The partition walls el are preferably arranged as illustrated in Fig. though itis to be understood that I contemplate any specific arrangement of such partition walls whereby air delivered to the chamber 6 is compelled to travel 'the Specification of Letters "Patent Patented Jan; 22g-,Algra n Application filed July 21, 1914. Serial'No. 852,237. v Y
lthrough the medium of bolts 11 and nuts 12, a sealing strip ofasbestos 13 being interposed between the plate and upper edge of the wall 3 whereby said cover plate and base provide a preheater of hollow type having a lengthy and tortuous air passage therein.
Ainl exteriorly threaded nipple 1st is threaded into an opening in the cover in line iitlrtlie chamber 6, and said nipple is passed through an opening 15 in the stove top 1G, niits-17 being threaded upon. the nipple on opposite sides of the stove top, and suitable packing 18 being arranged to seal the juncture between the nipple and cover. The packing is preferably of asbestos, whereby it will serve to prevent tense heat effecting comparatively smallmembers provided primarily with a view to avoiding i the sealing of the nut 17 in place by the heat and thus preventing ready disconnection of the preheater when desired.
The stove top 16 is in the removable portion thereof made up of the usual removable sections 19 and lids 20, and the preheater is preferably secured to one of the remo-Vahle sections and partly bridges the openings receiving the adjacent lids. As the preheater by reason of the length of the nipple 14 is wholly spaced from the under surface of the stove top it will be obvious that said preheater in no wise interferes with either proper heating of the-lids or their removal for any ordinary or usual purpose.
The preheater is subjected to the direct action of the flame on top, bottom, sides and hence the air entering said preheater, is highly heated.
Any appropriate outlet fromV the chamber 8 of the preheater may be provided for the air, though in the present instance I prefer to provide the edgewall 3 forming one side of said chamber 8 with comparatively small discharge openings 21 for this purpose.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In al preheater for range stoves, the
combination with a` removable lid for the central inlet tube bolted to the lid and connected to the top plate ot' the preheater, between the lid and upper oven Wall, the central tube forming the support for the preheater and whereby the heat and flames may engage all sides, top and bottom of the preheater, and one oi' the side Walls of said preheater being provided with outlet openings.
2. A preheater for stores comprising a base including a plate having an edge Wall rising vertically therefrom, a cover plate secured upon such Wall, the space between the base plate and the Cover plate being divided by a series of longitudinal and trans- Verse partitions to forni a central chamber and a tortuous passage on each side of the Central chamber, said tortuous passage including channels extending adjacent to and coextensiye with the length ot the sides of the edge Wall, the tortuons passage on one side of the central chamber open to said Copies of this patent may be obtained for central chamber and also to the other edge channel, the edge Wall adjacent one of the channels being formed With horizontally arranged openings colnmunicatng with the said channel and the upper portion of the fire box of said stove, and a hollowcon- .neetor extending from the cover and deltachably secured to one of the lids of said VLLIAM D. FLEMING.
