Abstract

19,188. Coleman, T. Aug. 20. Materials descending by gravity.-Sand, stone chippings, and other materials for roadmaking &c. are dried and heated in a shaft containing oppositely-inclined baffles built up of plates spaced apart, down which the material falls through gases rising from a grate. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus mounted on wheels and provided with inclined plates c, c<1>, c<2>, c<3>, down which the material falls into a hopper or box c with a lid. A bladed roller j may regulate the flow of material, which is heated as it falls by gases rising from a grate d and passing out by a chimney b. In modifications, the casing may be roofed, and the materials, introduced at the side, passing down over the baffle - plates and out through an opening in the side. Over the lower ends of the baffle-plates may be situated parallel plates to prevent the material from falling in heaps, and to deflect the gases. A baffle directs the gases beneath the topmost plate before passing to the chimney.
