Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, VILLIAM W. IIooPEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Suspender-End, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to provide secure and convenient adjustable fastening of the strap upon the Web of a suspender, so that the length of the suspender can be adjusted at the time of the attachment of the strap.
A further object of my invention is to protect the clothing against undue wear from the suspender parts.
A further object of my invention is to com bine the buckle and suspender-fastener for the strap in one structure.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel buckle of great accessibility and security.
It further consists of novel features of construction, all as will ybe hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a suspender structure involving my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section upon line :r :10, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on line y y, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of my buckle and the fastener therefor in its open position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the lower portion of the front web of a suspender having the usual binding 2. 'Adjustably secured at any desired point along the length of this web is my attaching mechanism 3, by` which the strap 4 is held upon the web. The attaching mechanism comprises the sheath or cover 5, of flexible material, preferably leather, and the buckle 6. The cover 5 con stitutes at the same time a protection to the clothing from abrasion by the buckle and a fastener for the buckle and in the form shown completely envelops the buckle, overlapping upon one side. To the inside member or flap 7 of the overlapping parts one aw 8 of the buckle is attached by the head 9 of a resilient head and socket, whose socket 10 secures the reverse end 11 of the depending loop 12 to the outside overlapping member or flap 13. The mating buckle-j aw 14 is pivoted at 15, so that the aws are side-opening and to be at all times parallel to the axis of the web. In the form shown it is not secured to the adjoining section 16 of the cover except through the hinge 5 but it may be otherwise secured, if desire To the upper part of the overlapping coversection 5 is attached a fiap 17. Each aw of the hinged buckle 6 is provided with transverse serrations 18, facing the other, or is otherwise roughened in any desired manner.
In operation the fastener is moved to the desired position upon the web, when the jaws of the buckle are closed upon and on opposite sides of the web with the head 9 outwardly' disposed. The flap 13 is then closed upon 8, with the socket 10 securely engaging the head 9,maintaining the buckle in closed position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which may come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, a side-opening buckle, a flap therefor, and a tab and loop secured to the flap.
2. In a device of the character described, a side-opening buckle, means for maintaining it in closed position and side-opening jaws secured within the buckle.
3. In a device of the character described, a buckle, a combined cover and closing mechanism therefor and a loop depending from the cover.
4. In a device of the character described, a buckle, rigid jaws within the buckle, a flexible inclosing medium and separable means for securing the latter in inclosing position.
5. In a device of the character described, a web, a surrounding iiexible cover separably attached at its free ends, and gripping-jaws connected with said flexible member and engaging the web upon opposite sides thereof.
6. In a device of the character described, a web, a side opening surrounding cover and substantially parallel means attached to said IOO cpver engaging the Web upon opposite sides rigid gripping means, a surrounding flexible t ereof.
