Be itknown that I, EDMUND E. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamler, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Combined Punch and Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined punches and shears for simultaneously shearing and punching metal, and has for its obj ect to provide a si mply-constructed and efficient implement of this class whereby an aperture is punched from the metal and a cleft formed through the metal and leading from the aperture.
Another object of the invention is to provide an implement of this character whereby an aperture is punched in the metal, a cleft formed in the metal leading from the aperture, and the metal adjacent to the cleft bent laterally to permit the insertion of a wire through the cleft into the aperture, and all accomplished at one movement of the operating-j aws.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in ce1:- tain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the operative end of the improved implement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the operative end of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the combined punch and shear member, and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the punchmember die.
The improved device comprises two jaw members 10 11 for movement toward and away from each other, one jaw member 11 having a socket (indicated at 12) for receiving a die 13, preferably tubular and with one side cut away, as at 14, and with a shear edge 15 in the jaw member leading from the cutaway portion of the die and continuing the same. The die 13 is designed to receive a punch 16 and the shearedge 15, to receive an opposing shear member 17, extending from the punch and preferably integral therewith, as represented in Fig. 4, which represents this member detached, the punch operating in advance of the shear member, of which it forms a part. The combined punch and shear member are secured in the jaw member 10 in position to coperate with the die 13 and the shear-face 15 in the jaw member 11 when the two jaws are forcibly engaged. In the face of the jaw member 11 next to the shear-face 15 a relatively large cavity 18 is formed, as 1 shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By this arrangement when a sheet of metal is placed between the jaw members and the latter forcibly compressed the punch member 16 will first pass through the metal and form an aperture therethrough, followed bythe shear member 17, which cleaves the metal outwardly from the punched aperture, and the continuation of the compressing movement depresses the metal at one side of the cleft into the depression 18, which opens the cleft, as represented in Fig. 6, to provide for the insertion of a wire into the aperture formed by the punch, as hereinafter explained.
Operating loosely through the jaw member 10 are spaced pins 19 20, with their inner ends at opposite sides of the combined punch and shear member 16 17 and bearing by their outer ends beneath a spring-plate 21. The inner ends of the pins 19 20 bear upon the plate of metal being operated on and represented at 22, and as the jaws are compressed the pins will be moved by the pressure of the plate 22 against the spring-plate 21, and at 'the return stroke of the aws the reaction of the lspring-plate will detach the punched plate and prevent it from adhering to the punch.
Theimplement is designed more particularly to form the strand-wire-receiving apertures in sheet-metal plates employed in connection with wire fences, and to that end the metal adjacent to the cleft is bent laterally to permit the insertion of the wire through the cleft into the aperture of the inner terminal of vthe same, and then the bent portion is returned to its former position parallel with the IOO IIO
body of the plate to prevent the removal of the strand-wire.
The jaw members may be actuated in any suitable manner or by any suitable power, but for the purpose of illustration are shown extended at one end and pivoted together, as at 23, and coupled movably at their free ends as at 24.25, to handles 26 27, the latter in turn pivotally united, as at 28. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the handle members are compressed a very powerful leverage action will be imparted to the jaw members to cause the combined punch and shear member to produce the required results.
The deviceis simple in construction, effectual and rapid in action, strong and durable, and may be adapted for all sizes of fenceplates or similar structures.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- In an implement of the class described, a jaw member having a die with a shear-face leading therefrom and continuing the same, an opposing jaw member having a punch for operating in said die and with a shear member for operating over said shear-face, Apins operating loosely through said opposing jaw, a spring-plate attached to said opposing jaw and bearing upon said pins, and means for operating said jaws.
