UNITED STATES Patented September 27, 1904.
JAMES H. CHIDESTER, OF SIBLEY, IOWA.
PORTABLE PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,126, dated September 27, I904. Application filed September 22, 1903. Serial No. 174,157. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. CHIDESTER, a citizen of the United States,-residing at Sibley, in the county of Oceola and State of Iowa,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Punches, is a specification.
My invention relates to portable punches. The rivets which hold the sockets of a buggy top together have a tendency to break and the two parts of the rivet remain in the respective parts of the socket and frequently beof which the following come rusted in, so that they are extremely difficult to remove without breaking the socket. Ordinarily to remove the broken parts of a rivet it is necessary for one man to hold a heavy piece of iron with a hole therein coinciding with the broken rivet on one side of the socket, while another man operates on the opposite side of the socket with a punch and hammer and drives the rivet out. This operation requires the attention of two persons and is generally unsatisfactory and not easy to perform.
The object of my invention is to provide a punch of improved and novel construction especially adapted for use in removing the rivets from. the sockets of buggy-tops, although adaptable for other uses as a punch, which will be portable and only require the attention of one person to readily and easily remove the rivets or the broken parts thereof.
To accomplish the foregoing object, I provide a punch comprising'a punch-block of convenient form to fit the hand of the operator and having an opening therethrough through which the entire rivet can be easily forced, an arm, a punch-guide, and a punch slidable freely in the guide and adapted to be struck by a hammer to accomplish the punching operation, all of improved and novel construction and so arranged and adapted as to be readily portable and conveniently used by a single operator.
The details of the invention are set forth hereinafter, and the novel features are recited in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the complete punch; Fig.
block 2, a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a view illus trating how the invention is used.
Formed in a single piece are the punchblock 1, arm 2, and punch-guide 3. The punchblock 1 is rounded at its lower end 4 to conveniently fit the left hand of the operator, and the body of the block is preferably made round, so as to be readily grasped. This punch-block is made solid and is provided at its upper end with an anvil 5, and through the anvil and the entire body of the punchblock there extends longitudinally an opening 6, which is of suflicient size for the entire rivet, including the head thereof, to be forced therethrough. The arm 2 extends in a curve from the punch-block 1 beyond the anvil 5 to the punch-guide 3 and is so shaped that when using the device interference with other parts of the buggy-top will not occur, the arm and anvil being within the cylindrical plane of the 1, so that the device is compact and can be readily slipped between the ribs of a buggytop. The punch-guide has an opening? therethrough which is smaller in size than the opening 6, but is in alinement therewith. The punch 8 is slidable freely in either direction in the opening 7 and provided with a-striking-head 9, while at its inner end it has a reduced portion 10, constitutinga punch-center.
The device is used in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, the punch-block 1 being held in the left hand of the operator and the anvil 5 pressed up against the socket of the buggytop. The punch-center 10 is then moved up against the rivet and blows applied through the agency of a hammer to the punch-head 9, which forces the portions of the rivet into the opening 6. r
The operation can be performed very expeditiously, and one man only is required to use this tool.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A portable punch composed of a cylindrical block having one end rounded to fit the hand of the user, a cylindrical anvil projecting from the other end of said block but eccentric thereto, an integral arm extending from the same end of the block as the anvil, both arm In testimony whereoflhave signed my name and anvil being within the cylindrical plane to this specification in the presence of tWo sub- IQ of the block, a punch-guide carried by the scribing Witnesses.
arm in line with the anvil and having a longitudinal opening, and a punch sliding freely I JAMLb CHIDESIER' in the guide and having a head, said block hav- VVHBHGSSGSI ing a longitudinal opening in line with said O. J. CLARK,
punch but of considerably larger diameter. B. J. CLARK.
