G. B'. PERKINS PLIERS Filed Aug. 1e, 1926 Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
FFICE- GEORGE BEN PERKINS, GF W'ENGARTEN, MSSOUR.
PLIERS. l
Application filed AugustY 16,. '1926. Serial No. 129,432.
The invention relates to combination pliers and has lfor its object to provide a device of this character having cooperating right-angularly disposed jaws movable in parallel planes, and which jaws may be used for gripping an article at the end of the pliers or to one side thereof, said side gripping being preferably used for tightening and removing nuts.
A further object is to provide the rear side ofthe upper jaw with a rearwardly extending bifurcated member adapted to be used as a tack or nail puller and with a vertically disposed and rearwardly extending cutter blade cooperating with a cutter blade on the upper side of the handle member and `adapted to be used for cutting wire or other material.
A further object is to provide the upper movable jaw with a downwardly extending integral shaft slidably mounted in the head of one of the handle members and provided with an opening in its rear side into which a curved .arm of the pivoted handle member extends, and by means of which pivoted handle member the shank may be controlled in its movement in either direction.
A further object is to provide the lower end of the shank with an axially disposed punch, which may be used for setting nails or for punching purposes, by placing the same on the nail head and hammering on the movable jaw.
With the above and other objects in View the invention resides inthe combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pliers,
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the head of the pliers, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the head of the pliers.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 1 and 2 designate adjacent handle members and 3 the enlarged head carried by the handle member 1. Slidably mounted in bearings 4 of the head 3 is a vertically disposed shank 5, the rear side of which is provided with an inwardly and upwardly inclined recess 6, into which the finger i' of the han-.
dle member 2 extends. Handle member 2 is pivotally mounted within a recess 8 in the under side of the head 3 and on a pivotpin 9. It will be seen that when the rhandle membersl and 2 are forced together, the shank 5 will bemoved downwardly and the gripping jaw 10 carried by the upper end thereof will be forced downwardly to a position where it willl cooperate with the fixed jaw 11 of the head 3. Extending outwardly from yone side of the jaw 10 at a right angle and in the same plane therewith is a jaw 12 which cooperatesk with a jaw 13 which extend-s outwardly from the side of the head 3 and at a right angle to the jaw 11; therefore it will be seen that cooperating jaws are provided at one side of the pliers as well as at the end thereof, and said sid-e jaws 12 and 13 may be used for gripping a nut thereby allowing` the pliers to be used as a wrenchand the handle members 1 and 2 to be spaced outwardly from the nut that is being turned, and at' the same time disposing the jaws where the relatively strong leverage can be obtained.
Extending rearwardly from the rear side of the jaw 10 is a bifurcated member 14, which is spaced from the upper side of the head 3 and is provided with a V-shaped recess 15V adapted to receive therein a nail or tack head when the device is used for pulling a tack or nail, and at which time the device is in reverse position and the upper side of the jaw 10 is used as a fulcrum. Extending rearwardly fnom the rear side of the jaw 10 and formed integral with the member 14: is a downwardly extending cutter blade 16, which cutter blade cooperates with the cutter blade 17 formed integral with the upper side of the head 3, and which cutter blades cooperate for cutting material, such for instance as wire. It will be noted that the members 14 and 16 are positioned where they will not interfere with the use of the device-for other purposes, and the member 16 is braced by the member 14. Therefore it will be seen that the cutter blade 16 will not break. The lower end of the shank 5 is provided with a punch 18, which may be used for punching holes or setting nails as desired, at which time the operator can impart percussive blows on the upper end of the shank. Handle member 1 is preferably provided with a flattened portion 19, and the handle member 2 with a sharpened end Q0, which end portions may be used for various purposes.
From the above it will be Seen that a combination tool is provided which is simple in construction and compact, and is provided in a single combination with means whereby the functions of many tools may be attained, thereby providingr a tool which is particularly adapted for eneral work of several kinds and one which is particularly desirable for automobiliste Where storage space is limited.
The invention havingr been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A tool comprising` a handle men'iber` a chambered head carried b v .said handle member, a stationary jaw carried b v the outer end of said head, a movable jaw above said head and cooperating with the stationary jaw, right-angularly disposed coope'ating jaws carried by the head andthe movable jaw and at a right angleto the handle member, a shank carried by the movable jaw, Said shank being slidably mounted in the head and havingr a recess in the rear side thereof. a handle member pivotallv mounted in the" chamber of the head,` and a finger carried by said last-name`d handle member and, extending into the recess in the rear side of the shank.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
GEORGE BEN PERKINS.
