TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. WYNN, of Scipio, in the county of Jennings, and State of Indiana, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Wagon-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a section of the some, through the line a: x, 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and eil'ective means of coupling therear axle of a wagon to the reach-pole or perch of the same.
It consists of a plate afiixed to the front ends of the rear hounds, for the purpose of holding then rigidly and forming a recess in which the pole rests.
It also consistsof a bolt or pin, passing transversely through the reach-pole and the hounds, and held in place by .a spring-button.
In the drawings, A is the reach-pole, and B B the bounds. The plates e e and a a a are 'affixcd permanently together, or may be formed in the same continuous piece of metal.
b is a bolt, passing through the hounds' and the aforesaid plates, which are bolted or otherwise afiixed thereto.
f is a side plate, affixed to the side of one of the bounds to cover the bolt-hole, and thus prevent the bolt, from working through on that side.
g is the spring-button, (preferably of steel,) which is pivoted to the other hound'in such a manner that it can be turned away laterally 'to admit or withdraw the bolt, or turned back upon the end of the entered bolt, as shown, to hold itfrom coming out. I I
The free end of, the button catches over a small hook-device, to keep the button from becoming turned oil from the bolt by accident.
' The bolt islwithdrawn by pushing it partially out from the hounds, by means of a pointed stick or other convenient instrument, which is thrust in at a hole in the plate f, which hole is immediately against the end oi" the bolt.
By this means the bolt is protruded from the bounds a short distance, when'it can then be grasped and. withdrawn easily.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The coupling-device a a a, e e, b,f, g, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
