FLOW-SUPPORT ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FRED Boosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Support Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plow-support attachments for use on trac tors; such attachments consisting of a pair of links that are carried by a suitable control lever, and between which links is arranged the upper end of the support bar upon which the plow is carried.
In the operation of this kind of plow attachment, there is a yielding at the togglelike connection between the links and the support bar to permit the plow to pass obstructions without injury to the plow or to any of the machine parts. After the obstruction will have been passed, the links and support bar are caused to return to theirnormal supporting position, either by spring connections therefor provided, or by manipulation of the operating lever.
The object of the present invention is to provide a connection or retaining device by which the plow support members are retained tenaciously in cooperative alignment, and which device besides permitting the said members to become disengaged as above described, operates to re-establish the tenacious connection between them after the plow obstruction will have been passed. Accordingly, the invention consists of the new construction, combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specifications. The invention is defined in the appended claims.
The several parts of my invention are identified by suitable characters of reference applied thereto, in the different views, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved latch device for plow supports.
Figure 2 is a top plan view on the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view on the line 33 in Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a vertical central sectional view of-Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view showing my latch device at operative position in connection with the links and support-bar of a standard type of equipment.
Figure 6 is a view of Figure 5, the latch device, and the frontal link having been removed.
Figure 7 is a view illustrating the plow attachment of the class referred to, applied to a tractor of standard make. To assist the clear understanding of the object, purpose, and functions of my present invention, a brief description of the plow attachment, as shown in Figure 7 is here given.
The hand lever A mounted on an upright B has a suitable check C to cooperate with a rack D, and whereby the lever may be held in a set position. To the front end of the lever A are pivoted a pair of links E and between the lower ends of said links is pivoted a support bar F, the said links and bar constituting a toggle. The lower end of the support bar has a loose connection with a suitable mounting for the disk plow Gr, and which mounting is carried by the forward end of a push bar H that has loose connection to a block K of a frame member of the tractor. The support bar is extended above the pivotal connection L and has a notch M in its side adapted to normally engage a bolt or stud 0 through the links E whereby the several parts are maintained in the proper alignment to hold the plow to the work. When the plow strikes an obstruction, the notch M moves away from the stud 0 (see dotted line position in Figure 7) so that the plow is permitted to swing relatively upwardly to clear the obstruction. A spring Q which is attached at its front end to the support bar F below the pivot L and its attached at its rear end to any fixed part of the tractor, causes the return of the support bar and of the links, to their normal position.
It is to retain these links, and the support bar tenaciously at their normal position, and to permit of their becoming disengaged, and then to re-establish their tenacious connection after the obstacle will have been passed, that my invention has been developed.
The invention consists of a bolt adapted to be passed through the links E at a location substantially the same as at O. A stout clip made of metal, preferably cast steel, is provided. This clip has an inturned arm to bear against the side of the bolt, there being an opening in the main arm of the clip to loosely engage the said bolt, and an offset in the main arm to engage the front edge of the link and the front edge of the support bar, and there being an extended beveled nose to be engaged by the support bar as it approaches its normal position of alignment, and a coil spring on the bolt and the main arm of the clip to urge the latter to tight contact with the adjacent link.
To carry the invention into practical effeet the preferred form and arrangement of parts is that shownin the drawings. 'lhe clip is of one piece cast construction and consists of the body portion or main arm 1 whose forward portion is turned inwardly at a right angle to form an offset 2. The purpose of the second offset 3 will be presently referred to. Extending forwardly from the offset portion is a nose t, which has the beveled face 5. in the main arm is an oblong aperture 6 of dimensions to permit of free clearance of the bolt 7 which has the head 8. Disposed loosely on the bolt, between the nut i) and t 1e main arm of the clip, is a strong coil spri V 10. The rear portion of the main arm is turned at an angle, thence forwardly in the form of an inner arm 11. his inner arm extends a distance to register with the side of the bolt, with which it has engagement by a curved recess 12.
The latch device complete in readiness to be installed is as shown in Figure 1. install the device on the attachment shown in Figure 7, the bolt or stud O is removed. The clip is then simply placed in engagement with the inner link E, the offset 2 and offset 3, making engagement with the front edges of the link E and the support bar F, respectively. (In instances where the support bar is of width the same as that of the links, the single otl'set 2 of suitable width is used). The bolt .7 is then inserted through the holes in the links and through the opening 6 of the main arm of the clip. The coil spring 10 being th n placed on the bolt, the nut 9 is screwed down unf the desired tension is obtained. If the l h device is installed at the location 0, as first described, there is then utilized th. lOtCll M which is common in the regular f n of attachment parts. In case it may be red to place the latch device at a lo above or below the bolt location 9, then t upper end of the support bar F may be n lilied accordingly, any form of u ch or rece being used.
The utility of my inv Lion is obvious, as the necessity f a sheari g )in connection at O, and which is used in many of the plow attachments for tractor is dispensed with. The degree of rigidity of the hold exerted by the clip may be varied to suit plowing conditions by simply adjusting the tension of the spring 10.
The spring 10 permits the clip to move sidewise a distance sullicient for the sup port bar to clear the edge of the offset, whence the clip snaps into engagement with the side of the link, and the frontal edge of the link and the frontal edge of the support bar. The or go of the notch P and the end of the inner arm are held at tenacious engagement with the sides of the bolt 7.
The cost of manufacture of my invention is comparatively small as practically no machine work is required in the making of the clip. As an accessory to the class of mechanical devices to which it appertains, it is easy to manufacture and handle in merchandistrade and is capable of being packed and handled economically as a merchandise commodity.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A latch device for plow supports consisting of a bolt, a clip having its inner arm to bear against the side of the bolt, and there being an opening in the main arm to loosely engage the said bolt, the said main arm having an interior offset and being provided with a forwardly extended beveled nose, a nut on the bolt, and a spring between the nut and the said main arm.
2. A latch device for plow supporting means, comprising a bolt adapted to be passed through the support links, a clip having its inner arm to bear against the side of the bolt and there being an opening in the main arm to loosely engage the said bolt, the said main arm having an interior offset to bear against the edge portion of the support bar, there being provided a forwardly extended beveled nose to be engaged by the support bar as it approaches its normal position in alignment with the links, a nut for the belt, a spring between the nut and the main arm to urge the latter to tight contact with the adjacent link.
8. In a latch device for a plow attachment of the kind described, the combination with the support links and the upper portion of the support bar therebetween, of a bolt passed through the said links, a clip having its inturned arm to bear against the side of the bolt and there being an opening in the main arm to loosely engage the said bolt, and an offset in said main arm to engage the edge of one of the links and the edge of the support bar, and there being pro vided an extended beveled nose to be engaged by the support bar as it approaches its normal position in alignment with the links, and a spring between the bolt and the clip to urge the latter to tight contact with the adjacent link.
4. A latch device of the kind described, comprising a bolt, a nut on the bolt, a clip that is U shaped in cross section and which has an opening in the main arm thereof to loosely engage the said bolt and having its inturned inner arm whose end is adapted to bear against the said bolt, an offset at the forward interior portion of the .main arm, a nose portion formed integral with the forward portion of the main arm and having a longitudinally beveled face, and a coil spring on said bolt between the nut thereof, and the outer face 01": the said main arm.
5. In a latch device for a plow attachment of the kind described, the combination with the support links and the upper portion of the support bar therebetween, of a bolt passed through the said links, a clip having its inturned arm to bear against the side of the bolt and there being an opening in the main arm to loosely engage the said bolt, and ofisets in said main arm, one of which offsets is adapted to engage the edge of one of the links, and the other ofiset being adapted to engage the edge of the support bar, and there being provided an extended beveled nose to be engaged by the support bar as it approaches its normal position in alignment with the links, and a spring be tween the bolt and the clip to urge the latter to tight contact with the adjacent link.
