UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
AUSTIN E. UOLEGRUVE AN D SHELTON REED, OF CYN'IIIIANA, KENTUCKY.
CHlNlNEY-CAP.
No. si 1,764.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application led February 15| 1905- Srial No. 245|72'7.
To @il whom it may concern:
or bars 5 connect the cone 4 with the collar l.
Be it known that we, AUSTIN E. COLE- A band 6 ol' conico-cylindrical form cncircles GnovE and SHELTON REED, citizens of the United States, residing at Uyntliiana, in the county of l-Iarrison and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful lmj rovements in Cl1iinncy-(1aps, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention provides a cowl or cap for chimnevs, stacks, or shafts of novel and peculiar formation for acceleratin the draft through the chimney or like shaft either for Ventilating or carrying off smoke and gases and which will prevent rain, sleet, snow, and the like from entering the chimney or shaft.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accom anying drawings.
l hile the invention may be adapted to diiferent forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without de arting from the spirit or essential features t 1ereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is 'shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurc 1 is a detail perspective View of a chimnevcap embodying the invention, arts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertica section of the ea i or cowl.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views or' the drawings by the same reference characters.
The cowl comprises a collar l, which is of a size to be fitted to the to of the chimney, stack, or like part, said col ar being provided with loops 2 for connection therewith of staywires for holding the cowl in place and bracin r the same. A deflecting-frustum 3 is litte to the upper end ofthe collar 1 to give an uplward direction to horizontal ainenrrents, W ereln,T the draft throufrh the chimney or shaft is accelerated. A delleeting-cone 4 is located above the collar and dellecting-frusturn, said cone being inverted and having its apex projecting below a plane touching the tods the delccting-cone 4 and is arranged above the delecting-frustum 3, the smaller base bef ing lowermost, so as to provide ample space between the upper 'iortion and the base o the cone 4. The band 6 is supported by means of stay rods or bars 7, rcferably connected at their lower ends to t e rods or bars 5 between the ends of the latter. A top S is arranged above the cone 4 and is of such diametrical extent as to prevent rain, sleet, or the like from entering the space inclosed by the band 6 to a certain extent. Stay rods or bars 9 support the top 8 and are by preference attached at their lower ends to the cone 4. The top S is hollow and composed of companion parts jointed at their outer edges in any convenient and substantial way. Each art of the top is of conical form and by be mg placed with their hollow sides facing the upper and lower sides of the top .resent a conical appearance. By reason of t ie peculiar formation of the top the upper side thereof quickly sheds water, and the lower side acts as a deilector to direct smoke, gases, and the like in an outward and upward direction.
A cowl or chimney-cap constructed sub stantiallv as herein set forth is adapted to accelerate the draft through the chimney or shaft by utilizing air-currents. The same striking the deflecting-fustrum 3 and glancing upward meet with the cone 4 and are again deflected outward, thereby creating a suction within the band 6, which results in materially increasing the draft through the chimney or like part.
Havinfy thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A chimney-cowl substantial] as described and comprising the collar 1, tie loo members 2 exterior of the collar 1, the de actingfrustum 3 at the upper extremity of the collar 1, the upward-Haring band 6 above the frustuni 3 and having its smaller end lowermost, the rods or bars 5 projected u wardlhv from the upward extremity of the co lar l, the deilecting-cone 4 exposed above the collar 1 and encircled by the band 6, the rods or bars 7 attached at their lower ends to the rods or bars 5 between the ends of the latter sind secured In testimony whereof we allix our signaat their upper ends to the hand 6 aforesaid to tures in presence of two witnesses.
support the sinne, the hollow top 8 above the AUSTIN E. COLEGROYE. cone 4, and the rods or bers E) altmohed at SIHH/PON REEIL [lh s] their lower ends to the top of the cone 4 and Vitnesses:
at their upper ends to the under side of the W. S. IIARDIN,
hollow top, supporting the latter. Tuos. POWER.
