CHIMNEY-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,828, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed December 29, 1894:. gerial No. 533,363. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, lViLHELM EIGEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chimney-tops, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the chimney is protected from rain, snow, and storm.
A further object of this invention is to construct a chimney-top in such a manner that an additional draft will be created, thereby effectually carrying on? the smoke and soot. Furthermore, the peculiar construction of the device will prevent currents of air entering the top and forcing the smoke and soot into the rooms of the dwelling, as is now often the case.
A still further object of my invention is to apply a novel device at the top of the chin1- ney that will automatically remove the soot that will naturally accumulate in the device.
The invention further contemplates constructing a device that will be stron g, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
-With the above and other objects in view my invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatiomand wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout both the views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved chimney-top placed in position on a chimney. Fig. is a transverse sectional view of the flue.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the inner flue provided with an annular flange 2, which is adapted to fit over the chimney. The said inner flue 1 near its top is enlarged and has a top 3, upon whichis mounted a double coneshaped spreader 3", the latter being arranged on the top of the flue by means of ribs 4:. The
double cone-shaped spreader contains a vertical bore 5 through its center, the latter being adapted to receive the vertical shaft 6 of the weather-vane 7. Upon this shaft 6 is rigidly attached the automatic soot remover or cleaner 8. The end of the shaft 6 operates in a bearing 9 arranged in the interior of the double coneshaped spreader. Ata point a distance above the annular flange of the flue the latter is surrounded by an outer casing or cold-air flue 10, being held in posit-ion by vertically-extending ribs 11. The said outer cold-air fine is also enlarged near its top and is cone-shaped. A roof 12 is adapted to fit over said enlargement and may be attached thereto in any suitable manner. A central opening 13 is provided at the top. From this opening 13 are upwardly-extending braces 14;,
upon which is mounted a cover 15. The cardinal points N. S. E. TV. are permanently fixed on the top of the cover.
Asupplemental soot-removerlfl is attached to the shaft 6.
The course of the smoke is indicated by a1 rows in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The air-currents are indicated in like manner.
Operation: As the smoke passes up the main fine the double cone-shaped spreader will cause it to travel in the outer casing. The cold-air draft in this outer line will readily carry it off under the opening of the cover.
The changing of the air-currents will operate the vaneand rotate the shaft to which are attached the automatic removers or cleaners. The constant draft within the interior of the outer flue will carry oif these impurities.
It will be seen that it will be impossible for the wind to strike the chimney-top in such a manner as to force the smoke down the flue, thus overcoming a great diiiiculty which exists at the present time. Furthermore, when a chimney is adjacent to a high building it is necessary, in order to obtain sufficient draft to carry off the smoke in a satisfactory manner, to build the chimney to correspond with the height of such a building. This is entirely overcome by the employment of my improved chimney-top, as the draft created by the use of the outer flue will be sufficient to accomplish the desired result.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of the above-described device Without departing from the. general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a chimney top, the combination of the inner and outer fines, a shaft on which the Weather vane is secured, an angular arm secured to the shaft corresponding to the angle of the inner flue, and a second arm extending downward from theshaft corresponding to the inner wall of the outer casing, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a chimney top consisting of'a central flue and an outer air fine in combination with a removable top, double cone shaped spreader and roof substantially as shown and described.
3. In a chimney top, a central flue and an outer air flue in combination with a removable top, a double cone-shaped spreader, a 20 XVILIIELM EIGEL. Witnesses H. C. 'Evnnr, C. L.
