DEFLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lEatent No. 716,450, dated December 23, 1902. Application filed December 16, 1901. Serial No. 86,089. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DENIS J. ll/IALONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deflectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in deflectors'of that class which are designed to be secured in front of a flue-opening to divert the current of air and cause it to travel in a new direction.
It is the object of my invention, among other things, to construct a device of this character which will cause the air-current to be more evenly distributed within the room than when the air-current passes directly into the room through the register-screen, to prevent a draft 011 those persons in front of the flue-opening, and a further object being to design the parts so that they can be manufactured at the minimum cost and will be both neat and pleasing in appearance, as well as adapted to be readily secured in front of any fine-opening.
To these and other ends my invention con-.
sists in the deflector having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved deflector. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the deflector attached to a wall, which is in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View thereof with the register or screen and wall, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the adjustable tie-rod.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the wall of a building, 2 the opening therein, which is directly opposite the open end of the heat-flue, and 3 the screen or register having the usual lattice front. (Shown by the section in Fig. Neither the construction of the screen or register or the heat flue or the mode of conveying the heat to the openingin the wall is material to my invention.
The deflector is constructed with the curved wings 4 4, preferably of sheet metal, and may be hinged together at one end by a pin 5, as shown.
One of the many modes of securing the deflector opposite the flue-opening is shown in Fig. 2, in which the numerals 6 6 designate two L-brackets, one arm of which is between the flange of the screen or register and the wall, and the other overhanging arm is provided with an aperture into which the pin 5 projects. The free ends of the wings 4 are held rigid by adjustable rods, which are composed of a rod 7, movable lengthwise in a telescopic tube 8, the hook ends 9 of said rods and tube engaging hook-eyes 10 in the said wings and said screen or register. In my invention the deflector is attached in front of the flueopening about midway of its width, and as the single current of air passes through the screen or register it is divided vertically in to two currents and deflected into horizontal paths at right angles to that of its former direction and parallel to the wall, each of the said currents moving in opposite directions to each other.
I am aware that deflectors have been heretofore used for the purpose of deflecting an aircurrent,and therefore do not claim this invention broadly.
There are many minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described,the combination with a screen or register adapted to be fitted into and held within the wall of a building, and having fastening-hooks connected therewith; of brackets having a part overhanging the face of said screen or register; deflectingwings hinged to said brackets and curved outwardly and away from each other, each of said wings having fastening-hooks connected therewith; and means detachably secured to said fastening-hooksfor adj ustably securing the outer ends of said wings to said screen or register, substantially as shown and described.
2.
