DEVICE FOR COUNTERBALANCING TONGUES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed May 22, 1905I Serial No. 261,647.
To all whom it inn/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. PARDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rydal, in the county of Republic and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Counterbalancing Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for counterbalancing the tongues of stalk-cutters, plows, or other agricultural machinery having a heavy tongue, and has for its object to produce a device of this character which can be easily and quickly attached to the tongue and which will be simple and durable in construction.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 a side View showing the application of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the bar upon which the weight 2slides, and which is secured at an intermediate point 3 to a support 4, which is attached to the body of the machine. The forward end of the bar 1 is bent downwardly and secured to the tongue by means of a plate 5, which is bolted thereto. A lever 6 is pivoted upon the bar 1 at the point 3 and is connected to the weight 2 by means of rods 7, so that the weight can be moved back and forth upon the bar 1 by the operation of the lever. A ratchet 8 is attached to the bar 1 and is adapted to cooperate with a pawl 9 on the lever 6 to hold same in a fixed position. The lever 6 is preferably made with a forked end, the two arms of which pass on opposite sides of the ratchet 8 and are each connected to the weight 2 by a rod 7 The support 4 may be of any suitable construction and is secured to the body of the machine by means of bolts 10.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that this device can be readily attached to the tongue of any machine by simply bolting the support 4 and plate 5 thereto. The weight 2 is then moved upon the bar 1 until it is in such a position that it counterbalances the tongue and is then looked in position by the engagement of the pawl 9 with the ratchet 8. Owing to the fact that the weight can be moved back and forth, this device can be adjusted to counterbalance tongues of various weights.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device for counterbalancing tongues the combination of a bar secured to the tongue and extending to the rear of the point where the tongue is pivoted, and a weight adjustably mounted upon the bar so as to counterbalance the weight of the tongue.
2. In a device for counterbalancing tongues, the combination of a bar secured to the tongue and extending to the rear of the point where the tongue is pivoted, a weight slidably mounted upon the bar, a lever fulcrumed upon the bar and adapted to operate the weight, and means for locking the weight in position.
3. In a device for counterbalancing tongues, the combination of a bar secured to the tongue and extending to the rear of the point where the tongueis pivoted, a weight slidably mounted upon the bar, a lever fulcrumed upon the bar and connected with the weight so that same can be adjusted by moving the lever, and a ratchet which engages a pawl on the lever to hold same in a fixed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. PARDEE.
