HARROW ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,018, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed April 21, 1887. Serial No. 235,661.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Olivet, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrow Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for harrows, the object of my invention being to provide a means whereby an ordinary harrow can be converted into a riding-harrow; also, to provide means whereby said harrow will be prevented from swaying from side to side when drawn across the field.
In the accompanying drawings, which illusirate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a harrow provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing a means for attaching the same to a harrow. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modification of the guide-wheel, and Fig. 4 is a detail View showing a runner instead of aguidewheel.
A refers to a harrow, which may be of ordinary construction, though in the accompanying drawings I have shown the same as a spring-toothed harrow, as to this class of harrows my invention is especially adapted. The rear bars of the harrow are provided with bolts a, the upper ends of which are bifurcated and provided with a perforation through which passes a springkey for securing the ends of the diverging arms B B to the frame of the harrow. These arms 13 B converge toward each other at their rear ends, and are attached rigidly to a block, 0, which is provided with a recess, 0, within which will lie the end of a block, D, this block Dbeing connected to the block C by a vertical bolt or pin,
so as to be capable of a horizontal or lateral movement therein. 7
The block D is provided on its upper edge (No model.)
with a recessed plate, (I, with which will engage a spring-bar, e, which is attached to the upper edge of the block 0, this spring-plate extending at its rear end beyond the recess in the plate d.
The sides of the block D converge rearwardly and have attached thereto plates E, which extend parallel with each other from said block, and to the rear ends of this plate is journaled a wheel, F.
G refers to a seat, which is mounted so as'to occupy a position over the wheel F, said seat being supported by a suitable bar, which is attached to the upper edge of the block D.
To one of the side plates, E, is pivotally attached a lever, H, the rear end of which is bent outwardly, while the front endis bentinwardly, so as tov engage with the end of the spring catch 0. When used without seat, instead of employing a wheel having a flat rim, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, I may employ a wheel having a sharp edge or rim, as shown in Fig. 3; or I may use a single runner, as shown in Fig. 4, and when such a runner is employed it will be rigidly attached between the bars E.
- The hereinbeforedescribed device when attached to a harrow will not only provide a means for carrying the driver, but will also serve to keep the harrow in a straight line and will prevent the same swinging from side to side when there is unequal pressure upon the teeth.
When it is desired to turn aharrow having my improved attachment applied thereto, it is only necessary to depress the rear end of the lever H, which can be done by the operators foot, and the harrow can then be readily turned.
If desirable, the block 0 may be provided with foot-rests, so that should the driver desire to swing the harrow out of line he can, by releasing the catch and pressing upon said foot rest, move the guide or wheel F out of line so as to guide the harrow to one side.
