Description

- 0. OSBQRN. Sulky-Pluw.

' WITNESSES INVENTOR THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOT0-LlTH.39&4-'l PARK PLACEJLY.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ORNAN OSBORN, or TRUMANSBURG, New YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKY-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,942, dated May 4, 1875 application filed February 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORNAN OSBORN, of Trumansburg, in the county of Tompkins and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Sulky- Flows; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sulky-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sulky-plow, and Fig. 2 is a detached view of a part thereof.
A represents the axle-tree, to which the tongue B and bar 0 are attached, and on top of said tongue and bar the foot-board D is secured. From the axle-tree A extend two parallel arms, E E, downward, between the lower ends of which is pivoted a frame, com posed of a sleeve, G, with two arms, H and I, extending from one end at right angles with each other, and the outer end of the long arm H extended upward and forward over the axle-tree, forming the curved arm J. The plow-beam K is pivoted to the lower end of the arm I, and passes through a loop, a, attached to the rear end of the arm H, as shown in Fig. 1..v On the inner side of the bar 0, near the platform or foot-board D, is secured a ratchet-plate, L, through which passes a bolt, 1), and upon this bolt is pivoted a lever, P, which has a tooth, d, on its inner side, to
catch in the ratchet plate or hub L, said lever being held close to said'hub by a spring, 8, on the bolt. The lower end of the lever is, by a rod or chain, f, connected with the end of the curved arm J. The upper end of the lever is provided with two handles, P P, by means of which the plow is raised by the driver at will. The rear handle P is in right position for the driver to take hold of when the plow is down. The other handle, P rests forward on the foot-board. When the lever is moved one notch on the ratchet the front handle I rises and takes its place, so that the driver reaches forward and takes this one, making theoperat-ion the same as a ratchet. O O are braces extending from the lower ends of the arms E E forward, one to the foot-board and the other to the bolt 1), as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire LO secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The swinging frame, consisting of the sleeve G, arms H I, and curved arm J, in combination with the plow-beam K, pivoted to the arm I, and held by the loop a, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the two-h andled lever P, having tooth d, ratchet-hub L, bolt b, spring c, and rod or chainf, with the swinging frame G H I J, having loop a, and the plow-beam K, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of January, 187 5.
ORNAN OSBORN.
