Description

T.v PARKER.
. Flows, A l 510,157,539, y Patentednec.,1s74.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS PARKER, OF MENOMONEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES DOWNING, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.157,539, dated December 8, 1874; application led October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS PARKER, of Menomonee, in the county of Dunn and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valu able Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation' of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is also a side vlew.
This invention has relation to double plows which are so constructed as to ail'ord a right or a left hand plow at pleasure, and it consists in pivoting double reversible plows to a horizontal depressed .portion of the beam in such manner that when the plows are released from certain catches, hereinafter explained, they are free to swivel laterally7 and can be easily reversed. as will be fully understood from the following description; and also in a novel construction of catches for holding the plows rlnly in a Working position, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the plow-beam, and c a straight depressed portion thereof, about which the plows are allowed to swivel when they are released from catches, hereinafter explained. The rear end .Of the straight portion c is turned up and inclined backward, as indicated in Figs. l and 3 by the letter c', and to this upturned portion a two handles, B B, are rigidly secured, to which a cross-bar. b, is secured. The rear depressed portion of the beam A and the upper portion of this beam are tied together by means of an inclined rod, C, which braces and stiftens the beam, so that it will not spring when subjected to considerable strain. D D designate two mold-boards,which are secured closely together, and which have secured to them shares c c. These boards D D are of the usual well-known shape, and they are rigidly secured to two land-side bars, E, by means of braces g h h. The two land-side bars E E are rigidlysecured together by means of parallel bars d d and short diagonal braces c e, thereby forming two united plows, either one oi' which can be used at pleasure. In front the plows are provided with colters k, which may be formed of one piece, and which should be removable. rIhe connecting-bars d el are applied to reduced cylindrical portions of the bar a, by means of straps f f, which form swivelingconnections of the two plows with the said bar c. At the front end of the upper plow, and pivoted to the curved portion of the beam A, is a loop, n, to which is secured a loaded arm h, and to the front end of which a rod, J, is pivoted. The rod J extends back, and is pivoted to an angular lever, m, which vibrates on the cross-bar b of the handles B B.. One arln of the angular lever m is connected, by a rod, p, to one end of a vibrating loop, r, which is pivoted to the handles B, and constructed with a notch in its front end adapted to receive either one of the rear ends of the landside bars E, as shown in Figs. l and 3. The loop n receives the point of the upper plow, and the notch in loop r receives the rear end of the upper plow, thus holding the workingv plow rigidly in proper position.
The plownlan, standing at the rear of the plow, can operate both latching-loops.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a reversible plow, the curved beam A,
having the horizontal rear extension a', iu combination with the two plows, revolving on the horizontal part a., the upper plow reaching to the curve of said beam, and secured by the loops n r, substantially as specified.
2. The catching-loops n r, loaded arm u', rods J and p, and angular lever m, in combination with the two reversible plows, as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS PARKER.
