ANVIL ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, MARTIN C. Encinas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reader, in the county of Vetzel and State of I/Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Anvil Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suclias will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiiis to make and use the same..
It is the aim of this invention to provide an improved hardy attachment for anvils comprising an arm member pivotally hinged to the anvil block, there being a cushioning means to cushion the arm mem-k ber in its fall when thrown down from the anvil, and a foot lever adjustably pivoted to the block having a sliding connection with the arm member for throwing the hardy or cutting atachment in position upon the anvil.
A feature of the invention is the provision of a in which has a sliding connection with an e ongated loop of the arm member, which pin is adjustable relative to the foot lever, so as to increase the leverage of the foot lever in throwing the hardy or cutting attachment in place, as well as rendering it easier to operate the foot lever in throwing the cutting attachment out of position. I Another object of the invention is to obviate the necessity of handling the cutting attachment (which becomes hot from use) with the naked hand. In practical fields the details of construction may be sub-V j ected to alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed. y
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Fig. 2 is an end view of the anvil showing the attachment in position and illustrating one connection between the foot lever and the arm member of the cutting attachment as shown in Fig. l. `Fi0. 3 is a` similar view to Fig. 2 partly in section, and showing a dierent connection between the foot lever` and the arm of the cutting attachment. .I
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an anvil block, on which in any suitable'manner the usual form of anvil 2 is secured. `Fastened by screws 3 to the block 1 is a bracket plate 4 having ears 5, through which a bolt@ extends. Pivoted on the bolt 6 (which is secured in place by the nuts 7) between the ears is the sleeve `8` of the arm member 9, the end. 10 of which terminates in an angular portion 11 having torting the portion 11 relative to the arm member, which would be the case owing to constantly throwing the hardy or cutting device in position.
Carried by the arm member is an arched elongated rod 14, the angular reduced ends of which are riveted or otherwise'secured at 16 to the arm member. Between the arched rod and the arm member a slot 17 is formed to receive the pin 18, which is carried by the curved arm 19 of the foot lever 20.` The arm 19 is so curved that it partially eX- tends back toward the foot treadle 21 of the foot lever, so that in adjusting the pin 18, the leverage of the foot lever may be increased. The curved arm 19 has a series of threaded apertures 22, in any one of which the pin 18 may be threaded, the same being locked in place by the lock nut 23. In this manner the pin 18 may be adjusted relative to thearm 19 to increase the leverage of the foot lever. The foot lever is provided with a series of apertures 24, in any one of which the pivot screw or bolt 25 may be arranged, so as to adjust the pivot of the foot lever. To throw the hardy or cutting attachment in place on the anvil, the blacksmith manun ally depresses the foot treadle of the foot lever, and through the medium of the sliding connections between the pin and the slot 17 the cutting` attachment may be thrown in position. To throw the cutting attachment out of position the operator may kick the foot treadle` to one side `inl the direction of the arrow a, which will lower the cutting attachment, or the operator may knock or push the cutting attachment off the anvil. In this manner the attachment is not handled by the naked hand of the operator. When the cutting attachment is thrown down out of position the arm member is cushioned in its fallby the curved end 26 of the leaf spring 27, secured to the bracket plate by one of the screws or fastening means of the bracket plate and between said ears.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. In a device as set forth, the combination With a support and an anvil motuited thereon, of an arm member pivoted to the support having an arched rod and provided with an elongated opening between the arm member and the arched rod, said arm member at its free end terminating in a tool, a foot lever adjustably pivoted to the support constructed with a curved arm provided with an adjnstably mounted pin having sliding connections in said elongated opening, and cushioning means for the arm member to cushion the same in its fall.
2. vIn combination, a support, an anvil mounted thereon, a bracket plate secured to the support, an arm member pivoted to the bracket plate, the free portion of which terminates in an angular part having a tool and a shoulder to engage the anvil, a spring device carried by the bracket plate to cushion the arm member in its fall, a yfoot lever adjustably pivoted to the support having a curved arm provided with an adjustably mounted pin having sliding connections with the arm member, said curved arm being so curved that it extends back partially toward the `loot operating end of the lever, whereby when the pin is adj usted the leverage of the toot lever may be increased.
