D. C. TURNER.
- PLOW.
No. 471,915. Patented Mar. 29, 1892.
avwewfoz STATES DON O. TURNER, OF ROSEBURG, OREGON.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,915, dated March 29, 1892.
Application filed June 20, 1891.
Serial No. 396,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON O. TURNER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Roseburg, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to plows, and particularly to a device for combining a right and left hand plow upon one and the same beam.
The object of the invention is to provide an ordinary plow-beam with a revolving sleeve controlled by a key or spring-bolt, which is operated from the plow-handles, so as to allow the plows to revolve without the operator leaving his place at the plow-handles.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a sleeve and thimble, one having a series of slots and the other one slot arranged to always retain a spring-bolt, so as to connect and disconnect said sleeve and thimble and allow the plows to revolve around the plowbeam.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts to accomplish the result just stated above,- as will be more fully described and set up in the following description and claims:
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 isaside elevation of a plow with my improved adjusting mechanism employed, showing the plow ready for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the revolving sleeve. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the thimble, showing a series of slots therein. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring key or bolt. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cap or covering for the spring. a modification of hand-lever and means of attachment. Fig. 6 is a modification of the sleeve.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts throughout the several figures.
A represents the plow-beam, and B the han dles. Upon the plow-beam A is fitted, near Where the standards are usually attached, a thimble 0, having a central opening to conform to the shape of the plow-beam and provided with a slot 0. The exterior of this thim- Fig. 5 shows ble is cylindrical, so as to allow the cylindrical sleeve D to revolve thereon. This sleeve D has a series of keyways or slots d, corresponding to the slot 0 of the thimble, and a pair of flanges E, situated opposite each other, to which are secured projections of the right and left hand plows F and F, these being secured thereto by bolts 6, which pass through the flanges and the projections.
The sleeve D is held in longitudinal position upon the thimble O by means of a rim or shoulder f, formed on the front end of the thimble, and a collar G, having set-screws F which is secured to the plow-beam A after the sleeve D has been put on the thimble. The sleeve D and hence the plows are adjusted and held in any desired position or at any angle by a key I-I, located partly in the thimble C and partly in the sleeve D, through the medium of the slots 0 and the keyways cl. The said key or boltH is provided with a stem g surrounded by a coil-spring h, one end of which is secured to the key or bolt and the other end to the plow-beam, whereby the key 'or bolt is held in its proper place to lock the sleeve D and thimble 0 together. Theend of the stem g is pivoted to a hand-lever I at t, and the said hand-lever is pivoted to one of the plow-handles B at b.
The sleeve D may be made in two parts and bolted around the thimble 0 when the plows are bolted thereto by the bolts 6.
To change the position of the plows after they have been secured to the sleeve and the sleeve secured to the thimble and the plowbeam, the hand-lever I is simply pushed forward, which will draw the key or bolt H out of the keyways c and d, compress the spring, and the weight of the plows will cause them to revolve and adjust themselves until they assume a vertical position one above the other, or the keyways d register with the slots or keyways 0, when the bolt or key 1-1 will be forced therein by the compressed coil-spring.
I am aware that plows have been arranged to revolve upon the plow-beam. Such invention I lay no claim to.
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjusting device for plows, consisting of the slotted thiinble, the slotted sleeve, and a key adapted to fit in the said slots, so as to lock the thiinble and sleeve together and to hold the plows in any desired position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the adjustable right and left hand plows, of a thimble and a sleeve, each having like keyways or slots, and a key adapted to fit in the keyways, whereby the sleeve and thiinble are locked and unlocked, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an adjustable plow, the combination of the cylindrical thiinble and the cylindrical sleeve with the key or bolt H, having a stem, and the hand-lever whereby the said key or DON C. TURNER.
