Description

`1.*1. MITCHELL. Shovel-Flows.
No. 141,583, Patented Augustanss.
UNITED STATES JOHN J. MITCHELL, OF LIVINGSTON, ALABAMA.
IIMPROVEMENTJN SHOVEL-PLOWS.
Specicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,583, dated August 5, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MITCHELL, of Livingston, in the county of Sumter and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Double- ShovelvPlows, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference be- 'Y ing had to the annexed drawings makingapart of this specification and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
lThis invention has relation to certain improvements in double-shovel plows; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the double-bracepstandards and handles, the adjusting screws and links, all hereinafter more specically described. The object of this invention is to provide a doubleshovel plow which shall be of simple construction, durable in its parts, and easily adjustable to conform with the various requirements of the work, such as running the plows deep or shallow, apa-rt or near together, very shelving, or more upright.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the plow-standards perforated from front to rear at a and b for the passage of the metallic brace-rods c. Each of these brace-rods, as usually constructed, is bent into an eye, d, at its forward or middle portion to receive the end of the clevis-bolt e. vThe ends of each brace-rod c are threaded and passed through the perforations a and b, which lie one above the other in the standard, so that each arm c forms a long angle with its fellow at the eye d. Suitable nuts n and washers w are provided on the threaded portion of each brace-arm c', whereby they may be adjusted forward or backward with relation to the standard, or in such a manner as to vary the inclination of said standard with reference to the direction of the draft.
The plow standards are adjusted to run the plows nearer together or farther apart by means of the following devices: On one of the arms c of the longer brace is placed one of the eyes of a link-bar, h, which is provided with a similar eye at its inner end, whereby it is connected with a screw bolt, m, passing through the standard transversely, and adjusted and secured in place by means of vthe lever-nuts n', under which are located suitable washers. A similar link, h', and adjustingbolt m is employed at the upper end of the rear standard, connecting the same with the handle of the opposite plow.
The handles K K are secured on the upper branches of the brace-rods by means of eyebolts o, nuts u, and clips w. These handles are capable of adjustment on the said bracerods. Perforations lv may be made in the handles near their upper ends.
Z indicates the clevis having at its rear end an eye, and at its front end one or more horizontal coils, as indicated in the drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The double-shovel plow-frame, consisting of the standard A, the adjustable angular braces c, the handles K adjustable on said braces by means of the clamp w lv, and the adjustable link connections 71. h', substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereuntol subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. MITCHELL.
