Description
PATENTED JAN. 16, 1906.
J. ERRBT. VEHICLE STEP.
APPLIGATIUN FILED MAY 15, 1905.
INVENTOR wlrnsssl JOSEPH ERRET, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
VEHICLE-STEP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed May 15, 1905- Serial No. 260,430.
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the ac-- companying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top plan view of my improved step in position, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
My invention relates to the class of vehiclesteps, and is designed to cheapen and improve their structure, more especially the means for clamping them to the support.
Heretofore the shanks of such steps have been forged, a clip being forged integral therewith and arranged to embrace the shaft or support to which the step is fixed.
My invention consists in making the clip separate from the step-shank and interfitting them, so that the step-shank may be cast, if desired, thus cheapening the construction.
In the drawings, 2 represents the step, and
'3 the curved shank, having an upwardly-recessed head 4. This head is provided with a curved recess on its top, the inner portion of which leads into a vertical hole 5, extending down through the juncture of the head and step-shank, as shown in Fig. 2. The curved top recess and hole are shaped to receive the clip 6, which has legs 7 7 to embrace the axle and axle-bed 8 and 9 or other support.
In order to hold the head or base of the step-shank more firmlyin place, I may provide a transverse ridge portion 10, as shown in Fig. 2, which will be drawn down into the axlebed when the legs of the clip are drawn down by the bolts 11 bearing against the clip-bar 12.
I have shown thethin side portions of the head as extending down to a level underneath and at the sides of the U-shaped clip; but it will be understood that these portions may be of varying length, and the interlitting of the clip and shank-head may be carried out in. other ways Without departing from my invention.
The advantages of the invention lie in the cheapness of construction, since step, shank, and head may be cast and the wrought clip applied thereto, and also from the neatness of appearance and strength of the structure.
Many variations may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention.
I claim The combination of a step-shank having an upwardly-recessed arch-shaped head, adapted to span the upper portion of an axle, and a separate clip extending through the recess and embracing said head and axle and arranged to secure the step-shank in place on a support.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
