TROLLEY-WIRE HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled September 18, 1911.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
Serial No. 649,795.
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN CHRISTENSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Evans City, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Wire Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a trolley wire hanger, and the object of my invention is to provide a positive and reliable means, in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth, for supporting a trolley relatively to a hanger wire.
My invention aims to provide a sectional hanger that can be easily and quickly clamped upon the hanger wire for firmly supporting the trolley wire. The hanger has been designed for a single trolley wire or a double trolley wire, and, the construction of the hanger is such that it can be easily manufactured at a comparatively small cost and is easily installed.
The invention further aims to accomplish the above results by combination of elements that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing; Figure 1 is a front elevation of a single hanger. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a double hanger partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan of a portion of the lower section of the hanger and Fig. 6 is a plan of a portion of a double hanger.
A single hanger in accordance with this invention includes a substantially U-shaped body provided with a pair of diametrically opposed extensions, each of which is formed with a longitudinally extending groove of a length equal to the length of its respective extension. The body portion 1 further includes a vertically disposed central hub 3 having its upper face provided with an annular recess at in which is mounted a split locking washer 8, the opening 7 of the latter alining with an opening 9 formed in the hub 3. The body 1 is termed the lower member of the hanger. The hanger further includes an upper member consisting of a body portion 10 and a pair of oppositely disposed arms 11. The body portion 10 conforms in contour to the shape of the hub The upper member is mounted upon the lower member and the body portion 10 is positioned in alineincnt with the hub 3. The body portion 10 is formed with a socket 14: which is in alinement with the openings 7 and 9. The upper member has its lower face formed with a longitudinally extending groove 12, which extends from one end to the other end of said member and which has its central portion offset with respect to the socket 141, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and which is indicated by the reference character (3. Offsetting the groove in the manner as stated, a clearance is provided for the stud bolt 15, when the hanger wire 13 is mounted between said members. The said bolt 15 extends forwardly through the openings 9 and 7 and engages in the socket 14;. n
The shape of the body 1 and extensions 2 with respect to the arms 11 is such as to provide an opening which is filled by the hanger wire 13, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The hanger wire 13 is mounted in the grooves 5 and 12, as well as extending through the offset portions 6 of the groove 12 and is clamped between the upper and lower members of the hanger through the medium of the said bolt 15 and locking the washer 4. The lower end of the bolt 15 is detachably mounted in a head 16 which terminates in a gripping member 17, the latter cooperates with a gripping member 18 for holding a trolley wire 19. The member 18 is riveted or otherwise connected, as at 20, to the member 17. The grooves in the extensions 2 are formed by the longitudinal ribs 21, these latter are overlapped by the walls of the groove 12 when the upper and lower members of the hanger are clamped together. The body 1, as well as each of the extensions 2, is reinforced through the medium of a web 22.
In Figs. 3 and (3 of the drawing there is illustrated a double hanger comprising a longitudinal body 23 having bosses 24 and extensions 25 at the ends of said body. The bosses 2 1 accommodate split washers 26 and bolts 27, the former retaining the hanger wire 28 in engagement with members 29 that are retained upon the body by the bolts 27.
The bolts 27 are similar to the bolts 15. The top of the body 23 has a longitudinal rib 80 that retains the wire 28 at one side of the bolt 27.
The hanger in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal, and it is apparent that the trolley wire can be detached from the hanger or detached from the hanger wire without lowering or detaching the ends of the hanger wire.
What I claim is z- A trolley wire hanger comprising an upper and lower member one overlapping the other, said lower member including a hub for an opening extending entirely therethrough and further provided in its upper face with a recess with which the upper end of the opening communicates, a split washer mounted in said recess, said lower member further provided with a groove, said upper member having a vertical socket opening at through said washer and engaging into said socket for clamping the two members together thereby maintaining the wire in position, and means carried by the lower end of said bolt for supporting a trolley wire.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
