l I I l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR USE IN THE MANUFACTURE OF RAIL-JOINTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed July 19, 1904. Serial No. 217,283.
To (ZZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. NICHOLS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Use in the Manufacture of Rail-Joints, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to means for use in the manufacture of rail-joints of the type shown in Patents Nos. 673,829, 717,025, and Reissue N 0. 12,074, in which spelter or other metal is poured about the base or foot of the rail, and it is designed to provide means of convenient, efficient, and simple character for use in damming the openings at the ends and bottoms of the rail-joints, where the molten metal would otherwise escape.
With this object in view my invention consists in the provision of clamps adapted for application to the rail-joints and having the novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a rail-jointwith the clamps applied thereto; Fig. 8, an isometric view of the clamps removed, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
1 1 designate the jointed rails, and 2 2 the joint-plates, which fit around the bases of the rails in such a manner as to leave a space 3 for the reception of spelter or other similar material.
4 designates the clamps, which are shaped to fit around the end portions of the joint and the rails in the manner shown and provided each with a movable jaw 5, secured by a wedge 6 or suitable means. Each clamp has in its inner face the recess 7 to receive the end of the joint-plate, the opening 8 to pass the rail, the recess 9, forming a seat for packing or luting material, and aseat 10 for the end of a bottom dammin strip or bar 11. The outer face of each c amp has a recess 13, which also forms a seat for packing or luting material. The top portion of, each clamp is cut away, as at 14, to provide for the free venting of the space 3 as the molten metal is poured therein through the hole 15 in the joint-plates.
/ The bottom damming-strip 1 1, which is designed to close the longitudinal bottom opening 16 between the two joint-plates, is usually provided with a packing-strip (shown at 17 in Fig. 4) which is of asbestos cloth or other refractory material. The strip or bar 11 may be removable from the clamps at one or both its ends or it may be permanently attached thereto. I prefer that it shall be removable at one of its ends.
In use the clamps are applied to the joint in the manner shown, and the rings or seats 9 and 13 are fitted or luted with mud or clay. The joint is then ready to be heated and poured.
The device described can be quickly applied to and removed from the joints and forms very simple and convenient means for the purpose.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, as various changes may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The device for the purposedescribed, having end clamps arranged to fit around the joint-plates and rails, said clamps having damming portions which close the openings between the j oint-plates and rails at the ends of the said plates and means for securing the same temporarily in place thereon.
2. The device for the purpose described, having end clamps arranged to fit around the joint-plates and rails, and having packing-seats, and means for securing said clamps in place.
3. The device for the purpose described, comprising two end clamps arranged to fit around the rails and the end portion of the joint-plates, and a bottom dam supported by the end clamps.
4. A device for use in the manufacture of railway-rail joints, comprising two clamping devices having each a movable jaw, and packing-seats, and a bottom dam supported by the clamping devices.
5. A clamp for use in the manufacture of railway-rail joints, said clamp having the movable jaw 5, the recess 7 to seat the end of the oint-plate, the opening 8 to pass the rail, and seats for packing or luting material.
6. A clamping and damming device for use in the manufacture of railway-rail joints,
said device having the movable jaw 5, and of said plates, and a bottom damming-piece 10 means for securing and releasing the same, carried by the said end clamps. the recess to seat the end of the joint-plate, In testimony whereof I have affiXed my the plpenifng 8 t(1) pass the rail, and thle seats signature in presence of two witnesses.
5 9 an 13 or pac in or utin materia.
7. A device for the pur pose described, I HENRY NICHOLS consisting of end clamps formed With dam Witnesses: ming portions for closing the openings be- E. W. NICHOLSON, tween the joint-plates and rails at the ends WM. D. GHERKY.
