TO ALL WHOM T MAY GONGERN:V 4
Beit known thutI, JACOB BROBST, of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen, and State 01","Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Heel-Patterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is e full and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to rthe letters ofreference marked thereon, in which like letters refer to like parts in the diicrentgures.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construe tion and operation.
The'nature of my invention consists in constructing an adjustable .metallic heelfpatte'rn for'marking bootheels of all sizes and grades. This adjustment is accomplished instantaneously by the most simple and e`ective means.
A A' represent segmental sections of myfgauge, which are hinged togetheijas seen in the drawings at a, which point represents the heck ofthe heel at the centre. These segments may be curved in any desirable style to suit the demands of the trade. The inner edges of these segments are straight, and,.when the apparatus isolosed up to the smallest compass, their edges moet. A slotted arm, B, is attached to the edge of one of said sections A, which eirtendsover and across section A'.V Seid slotted curved arm is connected with the hinge a, as s'eenin the drawings. C represents a stud, which is secured to the'edge of segment A', and which works in `slot e of curved `arm B. Said stud is provided with a set-screw, for the purpose of adjusting` and securing said segments inA adjustment, as will be readily'understood.
The operation is as follows Y The apparatus is set at the desired size, which may be gauged by a scale, properly numbered. It is then laid on in the proper position, and the form is marked oit', es hy solid patterns. At the same time,'the point ot'- au awl may be inserted throughone of the smell holes on each side of said heel, so as to slightly pcr'orate the leather. A line, their drawn from these points',`will give the front odge of Athe heel. Care must be taken to insert-the awlV through corresponding holes on each side, in order to 'o1-ing Ythe front edge of the heel at right Yangles to the line ofthe solero't the hoot.
' .Among the advantages presented hyA this apparatummaybe enumerated, first, its great simplicity, effective operation, its cheapness, together with its utility. The mechanic who uses this apparatus is saved the time and trouble of selecting from a great number ofpatterns, of ell sizes and grades of boots, in order to get one` suitable for the work in hand. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, 1,. Segments A A', hinged and operated in the manner and for thepurposes described and set forth. 2. The combinationot' the hinged segments and curved slotted arm land stud, and set-screw, the same being constructed in the manner and for the purpose set forth. l
3. Perforations cr. e' on the edge of sections A A', for the purpose ot admitting the point ot' a sharp instrin ment, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
JACOB BROBST.
