IMPROVEMENT in etovns..
' @In tlgetule :stemt-init tigen tettmi ndert uitbuiting grat. ni stmt 'ro ALL WHOM 1T MAY eoNoERN:
4Be it known that I, REMUS D. BURR, of Kingsborough, Fultoncounty, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves and Fingered Mittens; and I -do hereby declare the following descriptionV and accompanying drawings are suiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to vhh` 1t most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention `or improvements without further invention-01fV experiment.
The nature of myin'vention and improvements consists'in'eutting the front ofthe hand and thumb and. all the ngers of a glove or mit, joined in one piece of leatheror other material; also,`in cutting the whole orthree sides of the fore-finger 'joined to or in the same piece with the above-mentioned parts; and in cutting the back of the hand and thumb, andthe back-and sides of .the middleaand littlengers, alljoined in one and the same piece, or cutting the back of the hand'v and the backs and sides of the middle and little fingers all in one piece; also, in cutting the vback andy sides of the ring or third nger in one piece, and sewing i t to the back of the hand, andin cutting the back of `the'thumb separate from the back of the hand, and sewing it thereto, and in cutting the front of the thumb separate from the front ofthe hand, and sewing it thereto; also, in producing anew articleof manufacture, by applying my improvements, or-somc of them, in the manufacture of gloves or mittens. .y i
In the following description of my improved method of cutting and connecting the parts of a glove or mitten, I'refer tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspeciticatio'n.
Figure 1 shows a single piece of leather, or other material, cut to' form thefront or inside of a glove. The part A is to,b e turned .over upon the part B, to form the fore-finger complete, the edges a a being joined to form a seam, while the part' C forms the front andsides of .the thumb'. i Figure 2 represents,-in one p iccc of stuff, theback of the hand, and the backs and sides ofthe middle and little ngersof the same glove. l
' The edges, having the same letters, as b b, ce, rbc., are to be joined to form a seam.
Figure 3 shows the back and sides ot' the'third or ring-finger, and Figure 4 the back ofthe thumb. The edges indicated .by the samc'lettcr, to be joined to form the several seams and complete the glove.
It' preferred, the inside of tl1e' forc-ngcr may be cut separate, and sewed on, forming a seam' at the dotted line E; on iig. 1, and the front or wearing-side of the thumb may, in like manner, be cut separate, and attached to the other part by a seam at thedotted-line F G,' on the same figure.
lFigure 5 represents the front of a one-fingered mitten; the part H to be turned over upon the part I, to form the finger complete, or the inside of the finger may be cut separate vand joined by a seam at the dotted line J K, the part L forming th'efront and sidesrof-the thumb,"as in the glove; and
Figure 6 showsthe back of'the mitten, adaptedto cover the back of the hand and three fingers, the back oi' the thumb being the same as inthe glove shown iniig. 4.
It" thought desirable, the back et" the jthumb, for either the glove or the mitten, orfor both, maybe out joinedv to or in cne 'piece with the back of'the hand, and the seam or seams formed by the edges i t' be thus avoided. y i I What I claim asmy invention and improvements inglovcs and fingered mittens, is e 1. Cutting the front ci' tlierhand.- thumb, and all ehe'iingcrs, joined in one and the same piece of material,
Vsubstantially n.sshoxvn and described.
2. In combination with the front, cut in ono piece, -as above claimed, I claim cuttting the whole or three sides of the fore-iinger, also joined in said piece, substantially as decribed. 3. I also claim cutting the 4backot' the hand and thumb, and the back and sides of Vthe middle and-little ngers, al1 joinedinbne'andthesame piece of stui, substantially-Jas described.
4. I claim cutting the backof thchand with the-buck and sides ofthe middle and little fingers, all in one piece, as shownV and described.'
5. `In combination with the back of the hand and the middle and little fingers, cut as above climed, I claim the back and sides of the ring-finger, cut in one piece and sewed to the back, substantially as described.
6. In combination with the elements of the first claim, I claim cutting the back of the thumb separate from thelbaek of the hand, and joining it thereto by a. seam. v
7, In combination with the elements of the third and fourth claims, I claim cutting the front of the `thumb seperate from thefront ofthe hand,.a.nd joining it thereto by a. seam.
8. In combination with the front of a. mitten, cut as claimed in the first claim, I claim cutting the back of a. mitten with the back ofthe thumb in one piece, substantiily as described.
