Be it known that I, FERGUS FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in trousers-suspenders, the object of the invention being to provide an improved arrangement of the parts facilitating the adjustment and separation of the trousers and drawers both at front and back.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of suspenders constructed in accordance with my improvements. Fig. 2' is a perspective view of. the attachment at the rear for supporting the drawers. Fig. 3 is a front view of a modification of the front portion of the suspenders. Fig. 4 is a side Fig. 5 is a View of a modification of the rear of the suspenders. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a part detached.

Referring to thedrawings, 1 represents the shoulder-straps of the suspenders, which at their lower ends are formed into loops 2, adjustable in length by means of the ordinary strap-buckles 3. On said strap-loops 2 slide the draw-loops 4, which carry the means of attachment to the trousers and drawers.

In Fig. 1 the means of attaching the trousers comprises a strap 5, carrying a cast-off 6, in which is secured the tabs 7, and that to the drawers comprises a strap 8, having an adjustment-loop 9, adjustable by means of a buckle 10, and in which loop 9 slidesa drawloop 11, which in its turn carries a cast-ofl 12, in which is held the band 13, carrying drawerssupporting grips 14, adapted to grip flexible woven material not provided with buttons.

In Fig. 1 the two straps 5 and 8 are fixedly attached at their upper end to the draw-loop where they cross each other a hanger 15,which carries a metallic loop 16, through which passes a strap 17,'the inner end of which is attached to a loop 18, attached to a buckleplate 19, said buckle-plate also carrying a loop 20, attached by a short piece of webbing 21 to a'loop 22, which is itself attached to a castofl 23, which carries a band 24, having at its ends the grips 25 for the drawers. The other or free end of the strap 17 passes through said loop 16 and then underneath a clamp 38, pivoted, as shown at 26, upon the buckle. This construction renders it easy to adjust the position of the drawers at the back when the suspenders are in position, notwithstanding that the adjustment is difficult to reach, for by pulling down upon the free end of the strap 17 the buckle-clamp 38 is thrown open, and then the loop can either be shortened by continuing the pull upon the strap or be lengthened by pulling upon the part attached tothe lower portion of the buckle, this having the efiect of pulling the buckle 'down along the free end of the strap or producing the same effect as drawing the strap upward through the buckle. When the movement for adjustment has been completed in either direction,

the buckle-clamp is depressed to its position, locking the strap.

In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a modification of the front part of the suspenders in which there is a single strap 26 connecting the trousers and drawers cast-ofis, said strap slidingthrough the draw-loop 4. Its position through said loop is adjusted by means of two buckleclamps 27, pivoted upon loops 28, secured to or made integral with the draw-loop 4, these clamps being provided with inwardly-turned edges 29 instead of the usual teeth, also with an upstanding lip 31 for opening the clamp and serrated edges 30. These clamps lock the slidable adjustingstrap against release in either direction, and at the same time the construction is such as to overcome the tendency of one clamp to open the other when locking. The turned edges 29 allow the clamp to slip on the webbing when the clamps are being opened or closed instead of pushing the webbing along, as would be the case if provided with teeth at this part, as in the ordinary buckle.

ing a thick substantially inflexible support upon which the buckle-clamp can rest. In this modification shown in Fig. 6 the loop is detachably secured to the suspender-straps where they cross by means of a safety-pin 35, and on account of the great strain to which said pin is subjected I provide a hook 36, secured to the bar 37 of the safety-pin and hooking around the pin portion thereof, the latter being passed through the suspender-straps in such a manner as to disclose a portion thereof outside the suspender-straps on which the hook can engage. Obviously this hook can be attached to the safety-pin in many ways.

I am aware that I am not the first to provide separate means for adjusting the drawers and trousers; but in prior constructions such means have been located below the cast-ofi, on which account the construction was so limited in the range of accommodation as to make the device for adjustment practically inoperative in the majority of cases. By my construction I obtain a much greater range of accommodation, so that the means for adjustment possesses real utility.

It is to be understood that many changes and modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and such modifications I claim as being within the scope of my patent.

I claim l. Trousers-suspenders having in combination with the rear trouser and drawer supporting means, means for supporting the trousers and the drawers at the front, comprising supporting means both for the trousers and the drawers, and means located between the suspender-straps and the supporting means, for adjusting both absolutely and relatively the trousers and drawers, substantially as described.

2. Trousers-suspenders having in combination withthe rear trouser and drawer supporting means, means for supporting the trousers and drawers at the front, comprising suspender-straps, cast-ofis for the drawers and trousers, and means for relatively adjusting the drawers and trousers, located above the cast-offs, substantially as described.

3. Trousers suspenders comprising suspender-straps, cast-ofls forthe drawers and trousers, means for relatively adjusting the drawers and trousers, located above the castotfs and a locking device locking the. adjusting means against release in either direction, substantially as described.

4:- In trousers-suspenders, in combination, a Suspender-strap, supporting means, and an adjustable device between said strap and means, comprising a slidable strap slidably connected to the shoulder-strap, a buckle-plate connected to the Suspender-strap, and two buckle-clamps pivotally attached to said plate, between which clamps and the plate the'slidable strap passes, said clamps turning in opposite directions to clamp the strap, substantially as described.

5. In trousers-suspenders, an adjusting device comprising a buckle-clamp support, a connection between the lower side thereof and the garment to be suspended thereby, an adjusting-strap connected to the upper side of the buckle, a device attached to the shoulderstrap through which said adjustingstrap passes, and a buckle-clamp pivoted to said support, the clamping edge of said clamp pointing downward or toward the free edge of the strap when the clamp is opened, substantially as described.

6. In trousers-suspenders, the combination with the shoulder-straps, of a strap secured adjacent to the rear union of the straps, a device carrying the means of attachment to the drawers, and an adjusting-strap connecting the last-named strap and the device, said adjusting-strap provided with a clamp for looking the same, said device being adapted to open automatically upon pulling the free end of the adjusting-strap, substantially as described.

7. In trousers-suspenders, the combination with the shoulder-straps, of means detachably secured adjacent to the rear union of the straps, a device carrying the means of attachment to the drawers, and an adjustingstrap-connecting means and the device, said adjusting-strap provided with a clamp for locking the same, said device being adapted to open automatically upon pulling the free end of the adjusting-strap, substantially as described.

8. In trousers-suspenders, in combination with the shoulder-straps, means for suspending the drawers at the rear comprising a strap, means for removably securing the same to the shoulder-straps adjacent to the union thereof at the rear, and means for attaching said strap to the drawers, substantially as described.

9. Trousers-suspenders having in combination with the front trouser and drawer supporting means, means for supporting both the trousers and the drawers at the rear, comprising the shoulder-straps, and means for supporting the trousers, also means of attachment to the drawers, cast-off means and means soasse f vice, and an adjusting-strap, said device being adapted to open automatically upon pulling the free end of the adj usting-strap, a clamp for locking the same, and means of attachment to the garment, substantially as described. 14:. Trousers-suspenders having in combination with the front trousers and drawers supporting means, means for relatively adjusting the trousers and drawers at the rear comprising supporting means for the trousers and drawers, cast-off means, and means of adjustment, substantially as described.
