DRAWERS-SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FOR SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,064, dated February 2, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Fnnous FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Drawers-Supporting Attachments for Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a drawers-supporting attachment to suspenders, the object of my invention being to provide a device of this character which can be readily attached to or detached from trousers-suspenders without disconnecting or adjusting the latter in any way and which while attached can be adjusted to any desired height and there clamped.

My invention also includes an adjustable buckle for attaining the above objects.

My invention also resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the device attached to the suspenders. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the supporterzbuckle in position. 'Figs. 4 and 5 are front and rear views ofv the buckle detached. Fig. 6 is a view of the same detached and open.

Referring .to the drawings, 1 represents a suspender-strap of a pair of suspenders for trousers, having a common suspender-buckle 2 for adjusting the height of the strap-loop, a cast-off 3, carried by the loop, and suspenderends 4, supported by the cast-oli'. On the rear member 5 of the loop of the suspenderstrap is secured a supporter-buckle 6, which can be attached to said strap at any height thereof below the buckle 2 or can be attached to the strap 1 above the buckle 2 and can also be completely removed therefrom, both attachment and removal being accomplished without disturbing in the least degree the suspender-buckle. It can also while attached be adjusted to any height upon the strap. For accomplishing these objects the following is its construction: A plate 7 has hinged to the side edge thereof, as shown at 8, one of the side members of a wire loop or clasp 9, said clasp opening and closing transversely to the suspender-strap and its free end or other side member being bent inward and then again outward, as shown at 10, forming an eye or bight to engage a hook 11, formed upon the plate, the extreme end of said wire clasp being then bent into a hook 12, the tip 13 of which engages a lip or stop 14:, formed on the plate. When the tip 13 is pushed over the stop or lip 14:, so as to rest at the side of said stop remote from the pivot, the eye 10 is held securely under the hook 11 and the clasp is fastened or closed; but by raising the end 13 7 over the lip 14 and allowing it to spring in- 'ward toward the pivot 8 the clasp is open and .can be detached entirely from the suspenderstrap without disturbing the buckle 2.

When the clasp is closed or fastened upon the strap, it can still be slid along it. It can be secured at any desired position by means of a hinged clamping-plate 15, having teeth 16, which engage the inner side of the suspender-strap and firmly clamp the-same to the side of the plate 7, which is suitably bent at its upper edge in the usual manner, as shown, to more effectively clamp the strap.

The lower edge of the plate 7 is slotted, as shown at 17, and through said slot is passed a piece of elastic or suspender webbing 18, which has a buckle 19 for forming an adjustable loop, said loop in turn carrying a wire loop 20, to which is attached a cast-off 21, having a ball-and-snap fastening 22. Said castoff supports the suspender-ends which carry the supporterclips 23 of the construction shown in my United States Patent No. 7 10,67 5, granted October 7 1902.

The advantagesof this construction are as follows: The drawers-supporting device as a whole may be instantly attached to or detached from the suspender-strap, either above or below'the Suspender-buckle, as occasion may require, without in any way disengaging the suspender. In so attaching it means are provided for securely locking and clamping it in position, said buckle being slidable on the suspender strap before being clamped. The above construction, however, of itself would be defective, as in certain cases it would be inoperative. The exact spot upon the suspender-strap to attach the drawers-supporting device might be the suspender-buckle itself. Therefore in conjunction with the above I provide means for adjusting the distance from the buckle of the drawers-supporter ends. By so doing I am enabled to provide a suflicient adjustment in one direction or the other to always admit of the buckle of the drawers-supporting device being attached to the suspenderstrap either above or below the buckle of the latter. Furthermore, there is provided an instantaneous means for separating the lower part of this device from the upper part that is to say, the drawers-supporter ends from the buckle which is attached to the suspenderstrap-so that in the act of dressing or undressing the drawers-clips may remain attached to the drawers, while the upper portion remains attached to the suspend er-straps. This means of separation further admits of changing the clips from one pair of drawers to the other without disturbing the upper portion, or the upper portion may be changed from one pair of suspenders to the other without disturbing the drawers-clips.

I am aware that cast-ofis have been provided for drawers as well as for trousers; but my device accomplishes much more than thisnamely, that the device which is attached to the drawers may be removed as a whole from the suspenders and replaced thereon without disturbing the suspender-buckle, and this at any height desired, as may be required for proper adjustment.

I claim- 1. In combination with a suspender for trousers, an auxiliary supporting device for drawers, comprising means for holding the drawers, an attaching device for attaching said d rawers-holdin g means to the suspender-strap, said attaching device being wholly attachable to, and detachable from, the strap while the latter is in its operative position without interfering with the adjustment of the trouserssuspenders, and being adjustable thereon while so attached, and an adjustable connection between said attaching device and the means for holding the drawers, substantially as de scribed.

2. In combination with a suspend er for trousers, an auxiliary supporting device for drawers, comprising means for holding the drawers, an attaching device for attaching said drawers-holding means to the suspender-strap, said attaching device comprising a part arranged to be clasped around the strap to form a slide along the strap, and adapted to be unclasped therefrom, and a clamping device for clamping the attaching device at any desired height on the strap without interfering with the adjustment of the trousers-suspenders, and

being adjustable thereon while so attached, and an adjustable connection between said attaching device and the means for holding the drawers, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a suspender for trousers, an auxiliary supporting device for drawers, comprising means for holding the drawers, an attaching device for attaching said drawers-holding means to the suspender-strap, said attaching device comprising parts hinged together on one side and having coengaging fastening devices on the other side, thereby forming a clasp slidable along the strap, and a clamping device for clamping the attaching device at any desired height on the strap without interfering with the adjustment of the trousers suspenders, and being adjustable thereon while so attached, and an adjustable connection between said attaching device and the means for holding the drawers, substantially as described.

4. A suspender-buckle having a plate, a wire loop having one of its side members hinged to the side edge of the plate and opening and closing transversely to the plate, and a clamp turnable on the loop between the side members thereof, said plate having a hook in which the other side member of the loop may be engaged.

5. Asuspender-buckle consisting of a plate, having a hook member at one side, a wire loop having a side member hinged to the other side of said plate and opening and closing transversely thereto, a clamp carried by the loop between the side members thereof, said loop adapted to detachably engage said hook, and a stop means upon the plate by which the loop is prevented from accidental release.

6. A suspender-buckle consisting in combination of a plate, a wire loop pivoted on one side thereof, a clamp turnable on the loop, means by which the free end of said loop may be engaged to hold the clamp in position to engage a suspender against the plate, the end of said loop adjacent to the pivot being provided with means adapted as a spring to press the clamp out of engagement with the plate when the free end of the loop is released.

7. In a suspender-buckle the combination of a plate, a loop and a clamp, said loop hinged to the side edge of the plate and said clamp carried by the loop and hinged to one end thereof, and engaging means between the opposite side of the plate and loop.
