To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES D. Evans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to susponders, and aims to provide a novel and improved pair of suspenders for supporting pair of trousers or other garment in a convenient and effective manner, giving the wearer greater freedom of movement than with ordinary suspenders, and providing for greater ease and comfort.

It is the object of the invention to provide suspenders supported by the shoulders in a convenient and comfortable manner and connected adjustably and movably with the trousers by novel means provided for that purpose, there being two suspenders at the opposite sides which are independent of one another.

It is also the object of the invention to provide suspenders of simple and inexpensive construction, utilizing a minimum amount of material, and eliminating the necessity of using elastics.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, a pair of suspenders is employed, and they are duplicates of one another, being disposed in reversed positions to accommodate the right and left hand sides of the wearer. Each suspender embodies a shoulder strap 1 of V- shape, when laid flat as illustrated in Fig. 2, the limbs of the strap being arranged at substantially or nearly rlght angles with one another. The angle portion of the strap 1 is adapted to rest upon the shoulder with the corner projecting toward the neck, and the limbs of the strap in extending downwardly from the shoulder in rear and front, will lie in the proper position. The angle portion of the strap 1 is provided with a button, clasp or other suitable attaching means 2 engageable with a button-hole, catch or other attaching means with which the shoulder of the shirt S or similar garment is provided, whereby to hold the strap in place. Loops 3 are carried by the ends of the shoulder strap 1 for the engagement of a suspending cord or other flexible element 4 which is provided at one end with a loop 5 engaging one loop 3 to anchor the respective end of the cord to one end of the shoulder strap. The other terminal 6 of the cord is engaged slidably through the other loop 3 and is held by a clamp or clip 7 which is adjustable longitudinally along the body of the cord 4 whereby to adjust the length of the cord between the ends of the shoulder strap. The clamp 7 when loosened can be adjusted along the cord, and when tightened will hold the parts in position, thus providing for the adjustment of the suspendcr to accommodate persons of various builds.

The cord 4 is connected between its ends slidably with the respective side of the trousers T or other suspended garment, and for this purpose, a resilient strip 8 is used at each side of the trousers, one for each suspender. The strip 8 is curved to fit the side of the wearer comfortably, and upwardly projecting ears 9 are riveted or otherwise secured to the strip 8 and are provided with inwardly projecting grooved and headed studs 10 under which the cord 4:

whereby when the wearer stoops or goes through other movements, the cord 4 can slide along the studs 10 to relieve the suspender of any avoid any inconvenience to the wearer. The cord 4 can be readily engaged under and disengaged from the studs 10 for applying and removing the suspender to and from the trousers.

The strip 8 at each side of the trousers is detachably applied thereto, and for this purpose, three buttons 11 and 12 are stitched interiorly to each side of the trousers, and the ends of the strip 8 are provided with notches 13 while the upper edge of the strip is provided with a notch 14 between the ends of the strip. The notches 13 are for receiving the stitching of the end buttons 11, while the notch 14 is for receiving the stitching of the intermediate button 12, as clearly seen by reference to Fig. 8. In applying the strip 8 to the buttons, one end of the strip is moved longitudinally into engagement with the stitching of one button 11, said end of the strip being disposed between said button and the trousers, and the strip is then swung upwardly to move it between the button 12 and trousers so that the notch 14 engages the stitching of the button 12. The strip is then sprung to introduce its other end between the other button 11 and the trousers so that the respective notch 13 engages the stitching of the last mentioned button 11. The strip 8 is thus attached easily and eifectively to the trousers, and

- in being supported by the cord 4 will in turn support the trousers. The strips 8 of the two suspenders can be readily removed from the trousers to be applied to another garment.

When the suspenders are applied, the terminals of the shoulder straps depend at the front and rear and support the cords 4 which are in the form of depending loops when applied, and said cords are engaged between their ends with the studs 10 to support the strips 8 which are applied to the trousers. The straps 1 provide with the cords 4 continuous elements to rest upon the shoulders and which are connected slidably remote from the shoulder engaging portions with the strips 8 applied to the trousers. The strips 8 and cords 4 can slide easily elative to one another to accommodate the movements of the wearer. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the ears 9 instead of havingrthe studs 10 are provided with keyhole shaped openings 10, and members 15 are provided with slides 16 engaging the cord 4 and carry headed studs 17 engageable in the openings 10 to connect the slides to the strip 8, the cord 4 being slidable through said slides. This provides a di'lierent means for slidably connecting the cord with the trouser. supporting strip 8, although same as with the studs 10 above described.

Fig. 8 illustrates how the notch 13' in each end of the strip S can open downwardly, while Fig. 9 shows an adjustable buckle 3 for adjusting the forward end of either cord 4 instead of using the clamp 7 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A suspender embodying a shoulder strap, a cordhaving one end'anchored to one end of said strap and having its other end slidably connected with the other end of said strap, means for adjust-ably connecting the last mentioned end of the cord with the body portion thereof, and means for slidably connecting said cord between its ends with a. garment to be supported.

2. A suspender embodying a resilient strip, shaped to conform to the body and hold itself in position having notches in its ends and an upper notch between its ends for the result is the engaging, by its resiliency, the stitching of three buttons stitched to a garment to be supported, and a suspending member adapted to be connected to said strip.

3. A suspender embodying a resilient strip, shaped to conform to the body and hold itself in position having notches in its ends and an upper notch between its ends for engaging, by its resiliency, the stitching of three buttons stitched to a. garment to be supported, upstanding members carried by said strip near its ends, and a suspending member adapted to be slidably connected with said members.
