UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed June 17, 1904- Serial No. 213,002.
To all whom it 77mg concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. MAHAFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludlow Falls, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stovepipe-Thimble Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stovepipe attachments, and has for its particular object to provide a novel means which shall be convenient to use and neat in appearance for rigidly and securely holding in place the end of a stovepipe that enters a chimney or flue.
With this and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation of a portion of a chimney, showing a pipe with a thimble and collar in position thereon, the position of the pipe and thimble within the chimney being shown in outline. Fig. 2 is a front view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side-view, and Fig. L is a front view, of the preferred form of my improved thimble which is particularly adapted for use in old chimneys, showing the perforated ears designed for securing the thimble to the chimney. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a pipe, showing a screw threaded portion adapted to engage the screw-threads of the thimble and the collar. Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation, and Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the collar designed to fit upon the pipe and bear against thethimble. Fig. 8 is aview in side elevation of amodified form of the thimble designed to be permanently secured in a chimney at the time of its construction.
Like characters of reference designate cor-.
formed a flange 2, as shown in the illustration of the modified form in Fig. 8 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or ears 3, with perforations 4 therein for securing the thimble to the chim ney, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The stovepipe 5 is provided with a screwthreaded portion 6, adapted to engage the internal screw-threads of the thimble.
The collar which I employ in connection with the thimble is provided with a cylindrical screw-threadedportion 7, adapted to fit upon and engage the screw-threads 6 of the pipe, and an outstanding flange portion 8, adapted tofit against and conceal the flange 2 or the perforated ears 3 of the thimble.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The thimble shown at Fig. 8 may be built in the chimney at the time of the construction thereof, or the thimble shown in Figs. 3 and 4 may be placed within the opening of a chimney already constructed and the thimble secured therein by means of nails, screws,or bolts passing through the openings 4 in the ears 3. The collar shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is then placed upon the pipe 5, the screw-threaded portion 7 thereof engaging the screw-threads 6. The pipe 5, with the collar thereon, is then screwed Within the thimble until the flange portion 8 of the collar bears against and conceals the flange portion 2 or the ears 3 of the thimble.
The pipe 5 may be removed from the thimble and the opening therein closed by a suitable cap adapted to be secured within the said thimble.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and proportion of my invention without departing from its spirit or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a chimney-thimble connection, the com bination of a screw-threaded pipe, a cylindrical thimble screw-threaded externally to engage with the chimney and internally to engage with the screw threaded pipe, and a screw-threaded collar adapted to fit upon and engage the screw-threads of the pipe and to bear and fit against the thimble.
JOHN WV. MAHAFF Y.
In presence of S. O. WESTLAKE, H. S. ARNOLD.
