To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH SHURTLEFF, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference be ng had to the accompanying drawings, formmg a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stove pipe fastener, the object being to provide a simple and very eflicient means for securing a stove pipe section to a stove plpe thimble.
Briefly stated, the means for securing the stove pipe section to the stove pipe thimble comprises an annular presser member secured to the stove pipe thimble, and an annular flange, or other projection, secured to the stove pipe section, said annular flange being confined in the stove pipe thimble by means of the annular pressenmember. To prevent leakage of air, smoke, gases or sparks at the junction of the stove pipe section and its thimble, the latter is preferably provided with a tapered annular seat which engages the inner end of the stove plp'e section. The means for securing the stove plpe section to the thimble is so constructed that the stove pipe is positively maintained in engagement with the tapered stove pipe seat.

Fig. 11 is an enlarged vertical section illustrating the stove pipe thimble, and a stove pipe section secured to said thimble.
Fig. HT is an end view of the structure shown in Fig. II.
A designates a chimney which may be built of any suitable material, and B designates a stove pipe thimble secured to said chimney. A stove pipe section C is firmly secured to the thimble B as will be hereinafter described. A stove pipe section 1 is fitted to the section C; an elbow section 2 is fitted to the section 1 and a section 3 is fitted to said elbow section. A designates an anchor member riveted to the section C near the outer end of said section, and 5 designates a connecting wire attached to the anchor member A. This connecting wire passes through the sections 1 and 2, and its free end is bent around the lower edge of the elbow section to securely connect the sections 1, 2 and G.
The inner end portion of the stove pipe thimble A is provided with an annular seat 6 which engages the inner end of the stove pipe section C. This annular seat is tapered so that the stove pipe section 0 may be firmly forced onto said seat with the result of contracting the inner end of said pipe section, thereby firmly engaging the pipe section with its seat. A very tight joint is primarily obtained by forcing the pipe section onto the tapered seat, and since a pipe section may be easily loosened from a seat of this kind, I provide means for retaining said-parts in engagement with each other.
The means for securing the stove pipe section G to the stove pipe thimble B, preferably comprises an annular presser member 7 surrounding said stove pipe section and arranged partly within an annular groove 8 in the outer end of the stove pipe thimble. 9 designates screws connecting the annular presser member to the stove pipe thimble. The stove pipe section C is provided with an annular flange 10 which lies in the annular groove 8, said flange being, preferably, formed by bending a portion of the pipe section as shown most clearly in Fig. II. Asbestos packing 11, arranged in the annular groove 8, lies between the presser member 7 and the flange 8, so that the presser member may be adjusted toward the flange 8 to yieldingly force the tapered end of the pipe section G into engagement with its tapered seat 6. It will be noted that the presser member 7 and screws 9 serve as means for firmly securing the stove pipe section C to the stove pipe thimble. Moreover, the packing 11 prevents leakage of air, gases, etc., at the stove pipe receiver, and owing to its location the packing serves as a yieldable means for transmitting the pressure of the member 7 to the stove pipe section which engages the tapered seat 6.
I claim A device of the character described comprising a stove pipe thimble having an annular pocket at its forward end and having an annular tapered seat therein intermediate of its ends, a stove pipe section having an annular flange intermediate of its ends entering said groove to contact with said WhlCh ls'seated n said pocket and havlng a packing member, and means whereby said tapered rear end engaging said tapered seat, presser member is secured to said thilnble. 1o
