AIR-GRATE COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1910.
Application filed June 3, 1910. Serial No. 564,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND W. ELLING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented, new and useful Improvements in Air-Grate Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air grate covers.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple, cheaply constructed and efficient grate cover which is so formed that when inserted into the opening against the grate and clamped in position, it will eX- pand and engage the walls of the opening.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a wall showing a vent opening therein and the vent cover partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the wall, 2 the air inlet opening, and 3 the grate covering the same. The cover comprises a single sheet of metal 4 which is bulged outwardly at its center as at 5 and is centrally apertured as at 6. The edges 7 are arranged all in the same plane and are preferably sharpened slightly so as to enter or tightly engage the walls of the opening 2. A bolt 8 is passed through the aperture 6 and is provided with a hooked end 9 so as to engage the bars of the grate 3 and the outer end of the bolt is threaded to receive a winged nut 10. When the winged nut is tightened upon the bolt, the bulged portion is carried inwardly toward the grate and the edges 7 slightly expanded so as to be brought into tight engagement with the walls of the opening.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is The combination with a wall having an opening therein and a grate located in the opening, of a closing plate comprising a single sheet of flexible metal centrally bulged and having its edges arranged in a common plane and sharpened, together withathreaded bolt having a hooked end said bolt adapted to pass through the bulged portion and the hooked end adapted to engage the grate, and a winged nut carried by the bolt for adjustably engaging the outer surface of the bulged portion 4 bringing the same toward the grate and expanding the edges into engagement with the walls of the opening.
