THOMAS A. DE VILBISS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TC THE DE VILBISS MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF 'lOlEDO, 01-1510. CORPORATION OF OHIO.
Application filed April 9, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, Tnon'as A. Do Vin miss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Bulb-Attaching Means; and I do hereby declare tie following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to means for attaching air-bulbs to the air-inlet tubes of atomizers or the like, but is not 1' stricted to such use as it may be used in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate.
The object of my invention is the provision of improved means of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, easy to operate, and forms a tight and eflicient joint between the bulb and attached tube.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numeroud forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,--
Figure l is a side elevation of an atomizer embodying my invention with aportion broken away. Fig. 2 is an inner end View of the air bulb thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the air bulb and part to which it is attached with such part in section and with the air bulb in loose engagement therewith.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an air bulb and 2 an air-inlet tube of an atomizer or other instrument to which the bulb is attached. This tube is provided near its bulb attaching end with a flange 3 forming a dished or concave seat on the side thereof adjacent to the end of the tube, and the end portion 4: of the tube which projects from the concaved side of said flange is threaded to enable a binding nut 5 to be threaded thereon. The nut 5 has a side thereof adjacent to the flange 3 preferably of convexed form to adapt it to form a substantially complemental clamping member to such flange.
The bulb 1 has its inner end provided with Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Feb. 2, .19115. Serial No. 760,084.
an opening 6, which is preferably of slightly greater diameter than the end portion 0 the air inlet tube to facilitate an insertion of the nut 5 therethrough. The marginal edge of the opening wall is preferably reinforced or thickened, at '4', and the inner edge of its reinforced portion is provided with an annular axially or outwardly projecting flange 8, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When the open end of the bulb has been engaged over the tube part at between the flange 3 and nut f, a screwing home of the nut 5 will eifect a firm clamping of the interposed portion of the bulb between said clamping parts and will also effect an inward turning of the bulb flange 8 closely around the tube part 4-, due to the forcing of said flange 8 against the registering concave surface of the flange by the tightening action of the nut. It is thus evident that a close joint is not only provided between the opposing marginal surfaces of the flange 3 and nut 5, but also between the wall of the bulb opening and the tube part i, thereby effectually preventing leakage of air from the bulb at its point of clamping to the tube. This is found in practice to be quite an important feature as the nut 5 is necessarily considerably larger than the tube part 4, thus requiring a comparatively larger opening in the bulb to enable the nut to be inserted therethrough. By providing the marginal edge of the opening with an outwardly projecting flange 7 it is possible to make the bulb opening considerably larger than the tube part 4 without liability of leakage when the parts are clamped together, as the clamping action of the parts 3 and 5 against the bulb flange 8 turns it inward to restrict the opening to the size of the tube part to which it is attached.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In combination, a tube having a concaved flange portion, a nut threaded on said tube without the concaved side of said flanged portion, and a bulb having an outwardly flanged opening for receiving said tube, said flange portion and nut being lit) adapted to cooperate to clamp the bulb there operate to grip the bulb in spaced relation to between and to efiect an inward turning of the opening therein and to turn the bulb the bulb flange to restr ct the size of the flange inward to close contact with the tube bulb opening. when the nut is screwed home in clamping 2. In combination, a tube having an anrelation with sald tube flange. nular outwardly dished flange, a nut thread- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto ed on the tube without thedished side of signed my name to this specification in the said flange, and a bulb having an opening presence of two subscribing witnesses.
