oHARLEs An. LONG ANDV WILLIAM' AL N: Lone, or w'cnicasTile, MA'ssAcHU@ SETTS.
Letters Patent No. 80,553, dated August 4, 17868.
mrsovLMrNrIN KNIFE-ame.
KNOWV ALL MEN BY TH ESE PRESENTS: l
That we, CERLES B. LONG and WILLIAM A. N.` LONG, both of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, lhave invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Rings and wedo'hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which- Figurel represents'a perspective view of our improved ring.
Figure 2 represents a side view, 'and I Figure 3 represents a vertical 'section through the upperpart of the ring. v
To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention belongs to make and use the same, we will proceed to describe it more in detail. 4
i The object of our present invention is the production of a combination-ring, of peculiar construction, and
which shall serve not only as an ornament, hut as aconvenient ,cutter for cutting off threads used in' sewing, tying up of pnekagesyand for other similar purposes. l l Y In the drawings, the ring part A is shown withI a neck, e, having a cap, B. The neck a has als'lit or opening made through it for the reception of the peculiarly-shaped'knife o r cutter 6. i
The under side of cap B, together with the upper part G of the ring part A, is slightly channelled or cu out on aline with the slit in the neck a', whereby the knife or cutter b, when it is slipped into place in the slit or opening in the'neck a, is supported at the top in the slit in thecap B, and at the bottom in the slit in the part C of the ring. v y
The cutter or'knife b is retained in place or position by a. rivet, e, as fully indicatedin the drawings.
The cap B may be made in any desired f orm, and it may be mounted with a stone or diamondipreierred.
The cutter or knife b is made with inclined edges d cl, which are to be sharpened. The knife or cutter b can be tempered and sharpenedbefore it is slipped into place, and when dulled by long use, can be quickly removed for` sharpening. vAs no soldering is required in securing the knife, the danger and liability of drawing the temper by such an operation are entirely obviated. Y
'lhe knife or cutter b is so secured by the cap B as scarcely to be noticed except on close inspection.
By drawing the thread or twine against either of the inclined edges d, it is quickly cut or severed.
It is unnecessary for us to particularize the utility and great convenience of our invention, especially in stores and packirigroougs, snce'the advantages will be apparent to all. l
Having described our combination-ring, what we claim therein as new and of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The combination of.tl1e peculiarshaped kniieor cutter b. with the slotted neck a, cap B, and part C of the ring,` substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
