Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application lecl March 9, 1903. Serial No. 147,013.
To LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ORA D. SHAW, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to caps, and more particularly to that class of caps having vizors.
The main purpose of the invention is the provision of means for uniting' the vizor and sweat-band to the cap and for reinforcing the vizor and the lower edge of the cap.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of means for economizing the assemblage of parts constituting the completed cap, simplicity in its construction, durability, and inexpensiveness in the manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention includes the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and wherein I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, though it is to be `understood that I may make suchchanges,
variations, and modifications as come properly within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of a completed cap. Fig. 2 is a detail portion of the reinforcingstrip. Fig. 3 is a detail portion of the sweatband. Fig. 4 is a detail portion of the reinforcing-strip and sweat-band connected by stitches. F ig'. 5 is a detail section of the vizor and sweat-band, having the reinforcingstrip secured thereto by stitches. Fig. 6 is a ,detail section of the vizor, sweat-band, foundation-strip, and reinforcing-strip, all secured together by stitches. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the cap. Fig. 8 is a detail section of the finishing-cover, foundation-strip, and reinforcing-strip secured together by stitches.
In the drawings the numeral 2 indicates the cap, including a foundation-strip 3 and a crown-covering or a finishing-cover 4, the lowermost edge of which is doubled on itself; as at 5, and stitched together at 6 to form a vertical ledge 6 and a marginal beading 7, in
this instance extending entirely around the cap 2. However, it may extend only partially around the latter from one end of the vizor to the other end thereof.
The vizor 9, being shown as straight and of leather, though it can be of any suitable composite material and shape, is secured near its innermost edge and at the under side thereof to a reinforcing-strip 10 for a portion of the length of the latter and at one edge thereof by a stitching 11, said reinforcing-strip 10 having the remaining portion of its edge brought outwardly and folded over the terminals of the vizor 9, so as to lie between the finishing-cover 4 and the foundation-strip 3, and secured by stitching 12which extends from one end of the vizor around the back of the cap to the other end of the viZor. The other edge of the reinforcing-strip 10 is free to receive a sweat-band 13, which is secured thereto by a stitching 14. It will be apparent that the edge of the reinforcingstrip 10, having the sweat-band 13 connected thereto, is bent inwardly and upwardly over thelowermost portion of the foundation-strip 3 onto the inner face thereof and being connected a portion of its length thereto by stitching 15, which penetrates the foundationstrip 3 and the unattached portion of the finishing-cover 4 above the Vizor 9, thereby retaining the said cover 4 in a secure manner at the fore -part or front of the cap. Said viZor 9 is secured to the foundation-strip on its outer face at the fore or front part of the cap 2 in a fixed position by a stitching 16, which penetrates at an inclination, the said vizor 9 and the foundation-strip 3 thus overcoming any liability of displacement of the vlzor.
It will be evident that by having the reinforcing-strip 10 connected to the vizor 9 and the foundation-strip 3 in the manner as hereinbefore described materially aids the reinforcement of the lowermost portion of the said foundation-strip 3 and gives to the same an effective and neat appearance, furthermore serving as a securing means for the vizor 9, and thereby retaining the same in a more rigid manner to the cap-body and forming a connecting-strip for the said sweat-band.
The vizor 9 at its under side is channeled or grooved, as indicated at 17, to form a recess for receiving the inclined stitches 16, so that the same will not protrude beyond the surface of the vizor. Furthermore, it is obvious that the reinforcing-strip 10 will over- IOO IIO

cover therefor, a viZor, the latter provided with a reinforcing-strip connected for a portion of its length between the said foundation-strip and the cover, and a sweat-band connected to the reinforcing-strip.
2. A cap including' a foundation and a covering, the latter connected a distance to the foundation, a reinforcing-strip intermediate the unattached portion of the foundation and covering, and secured by a row of stitching, a vizor carried by said reinforcing-strip and a sweat-band, said vizor fixed to the foundation by inclined stitches.
3. A cap havingafoundation and cover connected by stitches for a portion of their length, a vizor secured to the foundation and having a reinforcing-strip, the same secured between the unattached portion of the foundation and cover, and a sweat-band connected to the reinforcing-strip.
4C. A cap including a cover and foundation connected for a portion of their length by stitching, a viZor secured to the foundation, a reinforcing-strip secured to the vizor and between the unattached portion of the foundation and cover, and a sweat-band secured to the reinforcing-strip.
5. A cap having a foundation, a viZor secured eXteriorly of the latter, and means connected to the vizor and surrounding the lower edge of the foundation, and secured to the latter.
6. A cap having a foundation, a finishingcover supported by the same and extending near the lower edge thereof and connected for a portion of its length thereto, a viZor secured to the foundation by stitches at an inclination, a reinforcing-strip attached to the under side of the vizor and surrounding the lower edge of the foundation and secured between the unattaehed portion of the cover and foundation.
7. A cap having a foundation, a finishingcover supported by the saine and extending near the lower edge thereof and connected for a portion of its length thereto, a vizor secured to the foundation by 'stitches at an inclination, a reinforcing-strip attached to the under side of the vizor and surrounding the lower edge of the foundation and secured between the unattached portion of the cover and foundation, and a sweat-band carried by the reinforcing-strip.
8. A cap including a foundation-strip, a cover therefor, having a marginal beading, a vizor, having a reinforcing-strip, the .latter connected for a portion of its length between the said foundation-strip and said covering, said vizor provided with a channel, a stitching in said channel for connecting the viZor to the foundation-strip and a sweat-band connected to the reinforcing-strip.
9. A cap includingafoundation and cover,- a vizor having a channel, a stitching in said channel connecting said viZor to the foundation, a reinforcing-strip having one edge connected a portion of its length to the vizor, and the remaining portion between the foundation and cover, and a sweat-band connected to the other edge ofthe reinforcing-strip.
l0. A cap including a foundation, cover, and a vizor, said cover provided with a marginal bead which extends entirely around the cap, a reinforcing-strip having one edge connected to the vizor and the foundation, and a sweat-band connected to the other edge of said reinforcing-strip.
1l. A cap comprising a foundation, a viZor abutting against said foundation and secured thereto by stitches at an inclination, a covering abutting against the upper side of said vizor and folded on the same, a reinforcingstrip secured to the Linder side of thevizor by vertical stitches, said strip passing under the covering' at the end of the vizor, and a sweatband secured to the lower part of the cap.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 20th day of February, A. D. 1903.
