Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HOMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney, Globe, and Shade Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' My invention relates to fittings for artificiallighting apparatus, and particularly to a construction for holding and supporting chimneys, globes, shades, and the like.
The construction illustrated in the drawings is for apparatus for illumination by incandescent gas-mantles. Y
The object of the invention is to construct a simple means for supporting the chimney, shade, or globe on the same general device. The main structural fitting mayv therefore be supplied by dealers to be employed with separate devices for supporting the shades or globes, as desired, so that the user may employ the device to support any one of many kinds of globes, shades, or chimneys as he may see fit. The device may therefore be said to be interchangeable and adapted to a wide eld of usefulness in the art.
The invention consists in providing'a structure having a platform and retaining-tangs for a chimney, the parts being so constructed surrounded bya casing, that in conjunction witha tube and a holder the device may be readily secured in place or removed therefrom for carrying a chimney, a shade, or a globe. The parts when assembled in use are securely fastened together, so as to obviate any Adanger of accident and yet may be readily separated when desired, or the parts may be interchanged, as will be more clearly seen on an inspection of the accompanying two sheets of drawings.
Figure 1 is a cross-section and side elevation of a structure embodying the improvements of my invention with a chimneyT and shade secured in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of a device for supporting the chimney and shade. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the casing and the centering and holding device for a chimney. Fig. 4 is a view, half in section, half in elevation, of a device, showing the improvements of my invention adapted for use with an upright globe.
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the same structure in use, but with the globe removed. The parts are therefore similar to anV assembly drawing of Figs'. 2 and 3.
The device for which my invention is particularly designed for use is used in conjunction with an incandescent gas-light system where a Bunsen burner supplies a mixture of gas and air for the heating of a mantle to incandesscence. 'Ihe Bunsen tube, however, is not involved in this invention and is not shown in the drawings.
The construction will be readily understood from what is shown and hereinafter described.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, 1 is a tube, which is usually mounted on the tube of the Bunsen, as is common in burners of this general class. 2 is a cylindrical tube of larger dimension, through which the mixture of gas and air passes immediately before ignition. The usual mantle for incandescence is employed of suitable construction in conjunction with my invention. 3 is a casing, usually of ornamental design, which is secured to the tube 1 and surrounds the same. 1, 5, and 6 are arms of a platform which is secured between the tubes 1 and 2 and whose ends extend outward and are securely fastened to the sides of the casing 3 for centering and supporting the same. 7 is a shoulder or ring, preferably formedfrom themetal of the cylinder 2, which serves to support the chimney, globe, and'shade holders. 8 is the upper edge or ring of suitable design, which extends upward from the lcasing 3 and surrounds the base of the holders. This is usually of ornamental nature, as shown in Fig. 1, and may serve to hold a globe, if desired. 9 is a collarlike member which is of slightly larger diameter than the cylinder 2 and provided with passages 10 to correspond with the projections 11 on the cylinders. This collar may be slipped down in place over the cylinder when the passages are lined up with the projections. Then the collar may be turned partially around to lock the same in place. I/Vhen in this position, the collar rests upon the shoulder? and is supported entirely thereby. 12, 13, and 14C are ears, which are supported by the collar 9 and are formed as a part of the annular rim 15. 16 and 18 are posts, which are secured to the ears 12 and 14 and are con- 'LOU nected together at ythe top by the ring 19. 2O and 22 are clips secured to the upper ends of these posts 16 and 18 for supporting the shade 23. A similar post and clip is mounted on the ear 13.
The chimney 24 rests upon the arms 25, 26, and 27, which connect the collar 9 and the rim of the holder. The chimney and shade are thus supported entirely by the collar 9 through the medium of the arms 25 26 27.` It is desirable, however, that the chimney be centered and held securely in place. For this purpose I have provided the clamps 28 29 30, which preferably are formed integrally with the platform and arms 4, 5, and 6. These are bent upward, particularly as seen in Fig. 1, and have integral tangs 31 32 33, which when the chimney is removed stand outward at a slight angle, as seen in Fig. 3. When the chimney is inserted in place, it engages the upper ends ofthe clamps; but as it is forced down into place it forces the tangs 31 32 33 inwardly until they grip the inside of the chimney throughout substantially their entire length, and thus hold it securely and firmly in place. When the holder shown in Fig. 2 is to be assembled, it will be seen that the arms 25, 26, and 27 alternate with the arms 4, 5, and 6. The clamps 31 32 33 pass upward through the spaces between them. These spaces are suciently large to allow the holder to be turned sufciently to lock the collar underneath the projections l1.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown the holder constructed so as to support a globe instead of the shade and chimney of Fig. 1. The holder is similar in construction to the holder of Figs. 1 and 2, with the exception of the fact that the ears 40, 41, and 42 carry clampscrews 43, 44, and 45 for the purpose of gripping the iange of the globe 46. The parts are assembled in the same manner, with the collar 9 locked beneath the projections 11 and the rim 1,5 inside the upper edge 8 of the casing. In Fig. 4 it will be noted that the inner rim of the globe engages the clamps 28, 29, and 30 in a manner somewhat similar to the engagement of the chimney of Fig. 1. This affords an additional security against accident.
It will be seen that in the construction of Fig. 1 the chimney and shade may be removed together by simply raising the holder having the rim 15. In a similar manner the globe of Fig. 4 may be removed with its holder. In either case the chimney, globe, and shade may be removed independently of the holding device. The construction will therefore be seen to be simple in its nature and easily assembled or taken apart and yet to aord secure means of supporting chimneys, globes, shades, and the like interchangeably.
What I claim is- 1. A device of the character described including a cylinder having a projection on its rim connected to said collar by a series of arms upon which a chimney is adapted to be supported, a series of ears carried by said rim for supporting a globe or shade, and a casing for the base of said device.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a platform secured in place therein, a series of clamps integral' with said platform for projecting up into and centering a chimney, a depending spring-tang in each of said clamps extending downward and at a slight angle outward when the chimney is removed, a cylinder above said tube, ashoulder supported thereby and a holder adapted to be supported and held in place on said cylinder and by said shoulder for supporting a globe, shade or the like.
3. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a platform secured in place therein having a pluralityl of arms, chimneycentering clamps carried by said platform, a cylinder above said platform, a holder supported by said cylinder, a rim carried by said holder having a series of arms with spaces between them, the spaces corresponding to the chimney-clamps and means carried by said -holder for supporting a globe or shade.
4. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a platform secured in place therein, a series of chimney-centering clamps integral with said platform and a depending spring-tang extending downward from each of said clamp members and at a slight angle outward when the chimney is removed but resting fiat against the inside of the chimney when it is in place.
5. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a platform therein, arms connecting said platform and casing, clamps carried by said platform for centering the chimney,a cylinder above said platform and a globeholder removably supported above said platform by said cylinder comprising a collar, arms extending therefrom, a rim carried thereby and means secured to said rim for supporting a globe.
6. A device of the character described comprising, a cylinder, a casing surrounding and extending upward around the base of said cylinder, chimney-centering clamps for the inside of the chimney situated between said cylinder and said casing, and a combined chimney and globe support carried by said cylinder and removable independently of said clamps.
7. A device of the character described comprising, a cylinder, a casing connected thereto by a series of arms, chimney-centering devices alternating with said arms, and a removable globe-supporting device carried by said cylinder.

A device of the character described including, a cylinder, a removable combined chimney and globe supporting member carried by said' cylinder, inside chimney-centering devices located between the globe-support and the cylinder independent of said globesupporting member, and a casing secured to said cylinder having an outer edge surrounding the base of the globe-supporting device and adapted to removably support a globe.
