Description

6. M. RAMSAY.
Globes and Holders for Gas-Burners.
Patented i une 17, 1873.
W Mf AM. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPIIIC ca Amfosaanus's PRocsss) UNITED STATES GEORGE M. RAMSAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBES AND HOLDERS FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,075, dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 2, 1873.
an efiicient, cheap, and neat mode of attaching and supporting the globe or chimney, all of which is clearly and fully set forth in the followingspecification including the drawing and letters of reference thereon.
The drawing represents a side view of a glass globe or chimney, or both combined, the base of which is expanded, and the throat or neck contracted immediately below the flame. The flamechamber is expanded in diameter about equal to the diameter of the base, and the top is contracted so as to allow only space for the free escape of the products of combustion. By this means a large quantity of atmosphere is collected and made to impinge upon the flame, and thus a large quantity of oxygen comes in contact with the flame, whereby combustion is better supported, the flame brightened, and an equal draft is obtained. The top of the globe beiu-g contracted to a neck, the flame is thus protected from rain and gusts of wind from above, while the narrow throat protects the flame from the wind below, which insures a steady flame, and enables the combustionchamber to become heated, and thus aids in rendering combustion more perfeet.
a is a metallic ferrule with three or more metallic springs, b, attached thereto. These springs b are coiled or bent so that the inner side of the expanded base rests on the springs,
while the top of them are expanded to conform to the inner side and lower half of the combustion-chamber. In order to attach my invention to an ordinary lamp-post, it is only required to screw off the burner, tube, and valve, and slip the ferrule a over the gas-pipe as it protrudes from the lamp-post. The ferrule a may be made to enter the hole in the post as a further support; then the globe or chimney is slid down over the springs. These springs may be attached to the ferrule a by solder, or lugs may be cast thereon with holes, into which the springs may be inserted; or an outer ferruiemay be driven on over the springs, thus inclosing the springs between the inner and outer ferrules.
This invention is applicable to oil, gas, and fluid lamps in houses, as well as to street-lamps. In some cases it may be desirable to paint the upper half of the globe on the outer side to serve as a reflector to throw the light down. The number and name of the street may also be painted on this part of the globe.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The globe, constructed substantially as described, having expanded flame-chamber and base, and contracted throat and neck, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The holder, consisting of the springs 11 and ferrule, or equivalent devices, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
