Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, FREDERICK K. BLANCH- ARD and JOSEPH F. PRIoE, citizens of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have jointly invented a new and useful Tag, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to an improvement in a tag to be used for identifying any article of manufacture, whereby such tag is made of celluloid, cardboard ,paper, leather, metal, or other suitable material in a wedge-like, keystone, or trapezoidal formthat is, the lower end somewhat shorter than the one opposite and containing notches on the sides near the larger end, by means of which the tag when passed between points made by tacks of thread between two pieces of cloth or by other method or means is engaged by said points at such notches and held in place firmly and yet by its construction capable of being easily removed or afiixed.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of our invention, while the claims hereinafter given define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 shows the tag in actual use held firmly between two pieces of cloth. Fig. 2 shows the outline of the tag with its notches in the side, the tackings which engage the notches and hold the tag in place, and two pieces of cloth between which the tag is held. Fig. 3 is an outline of the tag itself, showing the notches in the sides and the trapezoidal form of the tag.

The tag a is made of any suitable material in the form of a decapitated keystone or wedge-like shape known as a trapezoid, having its lower end (i somewhat narrower than the upper one 6. The notches f are made near the top on each of thesides 0. The

pieces of cloth to which the tag is intended to be fastened are fastened together with what is commonly known as tackings of thread it, said tackings being so arranged that the tag a will have to be pulled through the space with some effort, so that as the notches f are near the tackings h and the tag a is pulled through the space the notches f will slightly The part of cloth marked 9 is fastened to' another piece 72 at the lower end of g by the tackings of thread it, and these tackings it constitute the only sewing against which the tag must rest when once passed between the pieces of cloth until the notches f are engaged by the thread tacks it.

If it is so desired to use the tag on pictures or firm surfaces, the notches can be held in firm place by restraining wires or tacks, the ease of removing and aflixing the tag permitting repeated changes of tag with the same fastener.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture a tag of suitable material, of trapezoidal form, with notches in the sides thereof, by which notches the tag when passed between restrainingpoints made by tackings of thread, seams of cloth, wires or other suitable means of restraint, is engaged and firmly held in place by such restraining-points without the tag itself being sewed or tacked fast.

2. In combinationwith two pieces of cloth, fastened by tackings of thread, scams or other suitable means and material, a tag of suitable material, of trapezoidal form, with notches in the sides thereof, by which notches thetag when passed between such tackings of thread, seams or other suitable means employed, is thereby engaged firmly and held in place, without the tag itself being sewed fast.
