Be it known that I, J Anus L. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing atNewarkdn the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Filing and Jointing Clamps; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom pan yingdraW- ings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to that class of clamps employed for holding a saw while the same is being filed or sharpened; and the objects of the invention are to secure an improved construction of such a clamp, to obtain great convenience and. eificiency in use and less labor and cost in the manufacture of the same, to provide means in connection with said clamp for jointing the saw or evening the extremities of its teeth, to enable said jointing to be done more perfectly than is possible by hand, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which may be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.

The invention consists in the improved saw filing and jointing clamp and in the arrange ments and combinations of parts of the same,

all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanyingdrawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device as applied to a bench or other fixture. Fig. 2 is a plan of one end portion of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device; and Fig. t is a cross-section taken upon line a, Fig. 1.

In said drawings, 2 2 indicate opposite end pieces or supporting-brackets of my improved clamp and which are adapted to be secured to a bench or other fixture 8 and hold jaws 4 5 extending between themselves in vertical position to receive a saw-blade, Each end piece 2 comprises an inverted-U-shaped body portion 6, having integral with one arm thereof a vertical lip 7 adapted to lie against the front of the bench 3, and a horizontal lip 8, adapted to extend in over the top of the bench, whereby the U-shaped portion 6 is held out from the bench or support to freely receive a saw-blade in the slot provided between its arms. Said lips 7 8 are provided with holes 9 to receive screws 10, and preferably the horizontal lip 8 has a brad or wedge 11, adapted to be driven into the top of thebench, the extremity of said lip being undercut or recessed beyond said brad, as at 12, to receive a prying-tool in removing the device from the bench. The arms of the U-shaped portion 6 provide between themselves a slot 13, and the walls of said slot next the extremities of said arms are transversely recessed, as at I l 14:, to receive or partially receive the jaws 1 5 at or near their ends. Said jaws comprise metal strips, preferably rounded at their outer sides and being fiat at their faces to engage a sawblade. Furthermore, said jaws are longitudinallycurved toward each other in plan, so as to touch the saw-blade at their centers, even when their ends are unclamped, and thus guide the blade in jointing. The jaw 5 next the bench is secured at its ends, preferably by screws 15 passed through the adjacent arms of the U-shaped portions of the end pieces 2 2 and entering holes 16 16 tapped in the jaw. The other jaw t is at its ends perforated, as at 17, to receive the reduced ends 18 of thumbscrews 19, working through the other arms of the U-shaped portions and being upsetat their inner extremities 20 to hold the jaw loosely on said reduced ends. By this construction the jaw 5 next the bench is held permanently in fixed position, and the other jaw at is moved toward and away from it for clamping.

In assembling the parts just described the jaw 4cis first laid in its recesses 14 and the thumbscrews 19 inserted so that their reduced extremities project through the apertures 17 in said jaw. Said reduced extremities are then upset by means of a tool inserted through the holes 21 for the screws 15 in the opposite arms of the U-shaped portions, and afterward the jaw 5 is laid in place and its said screws 15 inserted. Great convenience and facility in the manufacturing of the device is thus secured.

At the top of closed end of the slot 13 in the U-shaped portion 6 of each end piece 2 is formed a recess 22, somewhat wider than the slot and extending through the body portion parallel to the jaws of the clamp. This recess is adapted to receive a file or portion of a file 23, as shown in Fig. 1. Thus when desired a saw can be jointed or the points of its teeth rendered even or in the same straight line by loosening up on the clamp, raising the them triangular and tapered slightly to re-' ceive the ends of a common saw-file.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The herein-described saw-filing clamp, comprising end pieces or brackets each having a U-shaped body portion with means for attachment to a bench or other fixture, longitudinal jaws extending between said end pieces with their ends between the arms of said U- shaped body portion, a thumb-screw on each end piece working through one of said arms and having a reduced end portion extending through the jaw and being upset at its extremity at the inner side of said jaw to hold the same loosely, and a screw in each end piece passing through the second clamping-jaw, said screw being in alinement with the said thumbscrew holding the first jaw whereby its perforation in the said second arm provides access to the inner end of the thumb-screw to upset the same.

2. In a saw filing and jointing clamp, end pieces or supporting-brackets each comprising an inverted-U-shaped body portion, longitudinal clamping-jaws extending between said end pieces and arranged at their ends between the arms of the body portions of said end pieces, means on said arms for holding said jaws and adjusting one of them toward and away from the other, the said U-shaped body portions each providing at the closed upper end of its slot a recess or socket extending substantially parallel to the clampingjaws, and files inserted in said sockets or recesses.
