a tilt CARL A.4 BLOIVIEEN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
ADJUSTABLE FILE-HOLDER.
Application led January 13, 1914, Serial No. 811,894. Renewed .Tune 29, 1916.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it knownvthat I, CARL A. BLOMEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Seattle, in thecounty of King and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Adjustable File- Holders, of lwhich the following is a specification. I j
This invention relates in general to the subject of hand tools, and has specialref-v erence to a novel form of holder therefor, that is particularly adapted to files, rasps and similar tools.
The main object of the invention is to provide a holder for the purpose described of simple and durable construction that will accommodate files of different types and sizes, and securely hold the same in rigid working position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lile holder which includes adjustable file clamping means for use in connection with one type of file, that can be swung out of position to render the device usable with files of another variety.
`With the above and other objects in View which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is "better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings `wherein` Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved file holder shown in connection with one `type of file. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of'Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4f is a transverse section on the line 4% of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of my improved file'holder shown in connection with a modified type of file. Fig. G is a longitudinal section onfthe line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the different figures of the drawings- Many of the file holders now in use are particularly constructed to be used with only one type of ile thereby rendering the use of the same very limited. Therefore, it is the purpose of the present invention, as hereto- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 112, 1916.,
serial No. 106,728.
fore stated, to provide a holder which is adapted to be used with files of different shapes. lll/'ith this end in view, the present holder is designed to embody in its organization a back member 1 which is preferably provided at one end with an angularly disposed supporting bracket 2. The portion of the body of the back memberl adjacent the bracket 2 is formed with a guideway 8, the side edges of which are beveled as indicated at l to form;` guide ribs 5, while the opposite end portion of the back member is provided with a plurality of adjustment openings G, which are preferably arranged in alinement in the longitudinal center of said member.
Mounted within the guideway 3 is a file clamping member 7 in the form of a slidable carrier, which for convenience in. assembling is made in two sections, namely a top plate 8 and a bottom plate 9. The said upper plate 8 has its side edges beveled as at 10 to match with the bevel sides 4L of the ribs 5. This arrangement facilitates the clamping together of the plates 8 and 9, by means of a rivet or equivalent fastening 11., within the guideway 3 so that the lentire carrier has a free sliding movement on the guide ribs 5. The bottom plate 9 of the carrier is provided at one end with an angularly disposed, depending threaded lbracket portion 12,- and at its 'o ther'end with a swinging filer receiving lug 18 which is hinged thereto as at 14. The body portion of the carrier comprising' the plates 8 and 9 is further provided with an adjustment opening 15 similar to the openings 6 in the body of the back member. rlhe said swinging file receiving lug 13 is adapted to be swung into and out of the slot or guideway 3, so that the end opposite the hinging point 14, which is provided with a longitudinally tapered dovetail groove 16, will project above the top plane of the back member when the lug is swung into a vertical position. `While in this position, the said lug 13 is adapted to receive the tapered shank of a file F placed therein, while the other end of the said .'[ile is engaged by a removable le abutment lug 17 which may bes'crewed or otherwise ini serted into one of the adjustment openings G, and which is preferably provided with a flat side to rmly seat the end of the file.
For the purpose of moving the carrier 7 in the guideway and advancing the same toward the lug 17 so as to clamp the le between the same and the hinged file receiving lug 13, there is provided an adjusting screw 18 which has at one end a handle 19 and a supporting connection with the bracket 2, and which is also in threaded engagement with the bracket 12 of the carrier. rllhus, it will be seen that for les of the type shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, that is, files provided with a tapered shank or end portion usually adapted to be inserted in a suitable handle, may be effectively clamped to the back member by placing the tapered end thereof in the tapered dove-tailed groove 16 of the hinged ile receiving lug 13 and turning the adjusting screw 18 so as to advance the carrier toward the abutment lug 17. It will be apparent that files of various lengths may ,tbe accommodated by this method inasmuch as the removable lug 17 may be inserted in any one of the adjustment openings G, and the carrier freely shifted back and forth in the guideway 3 to suit the other end.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings the invention is shown in connection with a flat file. When using the holder for this form of tool, it is only necessary to swing the file receiving lug 13 down below the plane of the back member thereby providing a free and unobstructed surface upon which the tool may rest. For the purpose of securing a file .similar to that shown in these figures to the backmember, it is necessary that the same should be provided with openings 20 to admit suitable fastening elements such as screws 21 to be inserted therethrough for engagement with any one of the openings 6 in the file back or the threaded opening 15 in the' carrier. y1n this form of the invention the carrier 7 may be as freely adjusted as in the other adaptation, thereby accommodating les of various lengths and securing accurate adjustment which is necessarily essential with tools of this character.
With further reference to the arrange* ment of the brackets 2 and 12 and the handle 19, it may be said that the same presents an advantage over many file holders which are now in use, since they permit the tool to be held by a workman in a manner similar to a plane.
1t is thought that other features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent without further description, and it will alsov be understood that various changes within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.
I claim:
1. A file holder comprising an elongated file back provided within one end portion thereof with a longitudinally arranged guideway and at its other end with a plurality of adjustment openings, an adjustable abutment member adapted to be fitted in certain of said openings and also adapted to engage with one end of the file to be supported, a carrier slidably arranged in the said longitudinally disposed guideway and provided with a nut member, a fastening device fitted to the carrier and engaging with the other end portion of the file to be carried, and a handle swiveled to one end of the file back and having a screw engaging said nut member.
