Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed June 8,1906. Serial No. 264,338.
To a, whom, 6t may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID DALE SHIRLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allerton, in the county of Wayne and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caponizers; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in caponizing instruments; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient instrument of this character by means of which the operation of caponizing may be perfectly performed.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved caponizer. Fig. 2 is a rear or bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4c in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 de' notes the body portion of the device, which is preferably in the form of a flat piece of steel having one of its ends slightly tapered to form a handle 2 and its other end reduced and bent to form a curved stationary jaw 3. Coacting with the latter is a similar-shaped. movable jaw 4, formed upon one end of a lever 5, which is pivoted intermediate its ends upon the under side of the body 1, as shown at 6. The opposite end 7 of said lever 5 projects at a slight angle with respect to themain portion of the same and is recessed or cut away along one side to form shoulders 8 and 9, which are adapted to limit the movement .Of an operating-slide 10, mounted upon the body 1. This slide is in the form of a plate, provided at one end with a linger-piece 11 and adjacent to each of its ends with pairs of projections 12, which are bent around to engage the body 1, and thereby retain the slide upon the latter and the end 7 of said lever between said slide and said body, as clearly shown in Fig. at of the drawings. 1n the latter view it will be noticed that the opening in the end of the slide is but slightly larger than the crosssection of the end? of the lever, so that when the slide is shifted longitudinally upon the body 1 the lever will be swung upon its pivot 6 to open or close the jaws 4 and 5. The angular disposition of the end 7 of the lever causes the slide to swing the latter and the shoulders 8 and 9 upon said end 7 to engage the projections 12 upon one side of the slide to limit the movement of the slide, as will be readily understood. The coacting jaws 4 and 5 form a spoon or bowl, and their opposing edges are beveled or sharpened, as shown at 13, so that the cord and tissues surrounding the testicles can be effectually removed, thereby avoiding what is known among poultryraisers as slips.
In operation the device is used as follows: The testicle of the fowl is exposed by any wellknown or approved operation and then engaged by the spoon or bowl, so that the cord passes between the jaws 4L and 5 when they are opened by moving the slide outwardly. The slide is then drawn inwardly toward the handle end of the body to cause the jaws to close firmly upon the cord and tissues, holding the cord so that it may be pulled out, the point of severance being at its inner end and not at the point of contact of the jaws. It will be noticed that the point of strain upon the cord and the testicle will be between the points of contact of said jaw.
l/Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that Ido not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein shown and described, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An instrument of the character described, comprising a body or handle at one end thereof, a lever upon said body or handle, a jaw upon said lever to coact with the first-mentioned jaw and a slide upon said body or handle for operating said lever.
2. An instrument of the character described, comprising a body or handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a lever upon said body or handle, having one of its ends angularly disposed, a jaw upon said lever to coact with the firstmentioned jaw and a slide upon said body or handle and engaged with the angularly-disposed end of said lever.
3. An instrument of the character described,
end with ajaw, a lever pivoted upon said body and formed at one end with a jaw to ooact with the first-mentioned aw and at its other end wlth an angularly-disposed portion having a recess forming stop-shoulders, a slide having one end engaged with the angularlydisposed portion of said lever projections upon said slide bent around to engage said body or handle and adapted to coaot with said stop-shoulders to limit the movement of said slide said jaws being curved and having their opposing edges beveled or sharpened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
