Description

A. M. TAYLOR. PORTABLE GARMENT HANGER.
APPLIGATION FILED 1 1113.17, 1905.
M 3 M N W A TTORWE 5 ANDREWV MYER TAYLOR, PORT El/VEN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters IE'atent.
Patented Oct. 1 7, 1905.
Application filed February 17, 1905. Serial No, 246,080.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MYER TAY- Lon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Ewen, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Portable Garmentdianger, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved portable garment-hanger which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, readily set up for use and easily folded for convenient storing in a traveling-bag, valise, and the like, and arranged to conveniently support a number of articles, such as a coat, vest, overcoat, trousers, and hat.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1. is a perspective view of the improvement set up ready for use, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the improvement as suspended from the top of a door.
The improved portable garment-hanger is preferably made of wire, one piece of which is formed into a back A, on the upper end of which. is pivoted at B a supporting-rod B, provided at one end with a ring B to permit of conveniently hanging the portable garment-hanger onto a nail or other similar support, the said rod. B in this case being fastened to the back A by a ring C engaging the rear end B of the rod B, as plainly indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the rod B is in this position, it practicallyforms an extension of the upper end of the back A, but when a nail or similar support is not available then the rod B is swung into an. angular position. relative to the back A, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the rear end B of the rod can be engaged with the top of a door 1) or similar support to suspend the garment-hanger from the said door. It is understood that the rod B can swing from a vertical position into this angular position; but further swinging motion of the rod is prevented by a suitable stop B between the rod and the back A.
The back A is provided between its ends with eyes A and A located one above the other and on which are fulcrumed supporting-bars E and F, each provided at its outer end with loops to form a wide support for the garment to be supported..- A distance below the lowermost eye A is arranged a forwardlyextending coat hook G for supporting a heavy garment, such as an overcoat, while a coat is preferably hung on the supportingbar E and a vest on the supporting-bar F.
The lower end of the back A terminates in a small hook A", adapted to be engaged by the eye H of a trousers-support H of any ap proved construction, the said trousers-support being arranged to clamp the trousers in position, so that the trousers hang naturally down from the said support to avoid folding and consequent creasing of the trousers.
When the device is not in use, the supports E and F can be readily swung on the eyes A and A into alinement with. the back A, so as to take up very little room, and the trouserssupport H when the device is not to be used is disengaged from the small hook A and placed lengthwise on the back A, so that the entire garment-hanger takes up very little room to permit its convenient storing in a small satchel, valise, or the like.
When the rod B is suspended from the door D as described, the front or looped portion B of the said rod can be used as a support for a hat or like article.
The trousers-support H is preferably made of a single piece of wire bent to form the longitudinal members H H H, of which the middle or clamping member H is mounted to turn on the connecting end member H as a pivot, the said end member H connecting the top and bottom members H and H" with. each other at one end. The free end of the clamping member H is adapted to engage a spring-clamp ll, formed by the other connecting member for the top and bottom. members H H". By the arrangement described the clamping member H can be readily opened to permit of placing the waistband of the trousers in position and between the members H? H. l/Vhen this is done, the
clamping member H is closed tohold the garment in place.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured of single pieces of wire united in the manner described, and the device can be quickly set up and suspended from a suitable support in a room as described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A portable garment-hanger comprising a back provided between its ends with eyes, a small hook at the lower end of the back, a
coat-hook integral with the back, above the small hook, and a supporting-rod pivoted at the upper end of the back, the supportingrod being adapted to suspend the hanger from a fixed support and to support a hat or like article.
2. A portable garment-hanger comprising a back provided between its ends with eyes, a small hook at the lower end of the back, a coat-hook integral with the back, above the small hook, a supporting-rod pivoted at the upper end of the back, the supporting-rod being adapted to suspend the hanger from a fixed support and to support a hat or like article, and supporting-bars hung at their middles in the said eyes, to stand at right angles to the back or fold lengthwise thereof.
3. A portable garment-hanger comprising a back provided between its ends with eyes, a small hook at the lower end of the back, a coathook integral with the back, above the small hook, a supporting-rod pivoted at the upper end of the back, the supporting-rod being adapted to suspend the hanger from a fixed support and to support a hat or like article, supporting-bars hung at their middles in the said eyes, to stand at right angles to the back or fold lengthwise thereof, and a trousers-support adapted to be hung at its middle to the said small hook.
4. A portable garment-hanger provided with a back, garment suppor-ting devices hung on the said back, one above the other, a coat-hook on the said back, below the said devices, and a supporting-rod fulcrumed on the upper end of the back and adapted to swing at an angle thereto, to suspend the garmenthanger from a fixed support and to support an article of wearing-apparel.
5. A portable garment-hanger provided with a back, garment-supporting devices hung on the said back, one above the other, a coat-hook on the said back, below the said devices, a supporting-rod fulcrunied on the upper end of the back and adapted to swing at an angle thereto, to suspend the garmenthanger from a fixed support and to support an article of wearing-apparel, and means for locking the supporting-rod in position on the said back.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
