BRISTLE-BRUSH- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES HERMAN ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bristle-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a bristle-brush adapted particularly for dental purposes, and comprises a stem adapted to be inserted in the chuck of a dental engine, said stem having a head integral therewith and a sleeve between which and said head the bristles are secured, said sleeve having a depending shank adapted to be immovably and permanently interlocked with the stem.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a mandrel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents 'a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view. Figs. 4: and 5 represent an elevation and a sectional view, respectively, of a mandrel, showing a different form of brush that may be employed. Fig. 6 represents a sectional View of aslightlydifferent form of mandrel and brush.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a mandrel having a stem B and a head C integral therewith, it being noted that there is no opening or slot in the head, and said head extending sufficiently to form a shoulder against which the bristles D abut, it being noted that the same surround the upper portion of the stem B. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that my present invention is adapted for use in connection with a dental engine, the stem B being adapted to be inserted in the chuck or tool-holder of a dental engine of the character familiar to those skilled in the art, to the construction of which I herein make no claim, and I have therefore not deemed it necessary to describe or refer to the same in detail.
E designates a collar or sleeve which is adapted to engage with the opposite side of the bristles from that engaged by the head (I, and said collar is provided with a depending neck or sleeve, by which it is adapted to be fixedly or immovably secured to the stem B, in the present instance by being spun into nicks F, formed in the stem B.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings the bristles extend radially from the stem, while in Figs. 4 and 5 the bristles extend at an angle, forming a cupshaped brush.
It will be evident that the stem B is the same in all of the forms except that shown in Fig. 6, which is represented by B, and the head 0 is of different forms, such as C in Fig. 5 and G in Fig. 6. The bristles are of course the same in all of the illustrations, their angle of inclination only differing. The collar or sleeve E is shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of a distinctly conical form, (indicated by E.) The fastening in nicks F is the same as that shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 6 a different conical form or sleeve E is used, which is held by friction to the enlarged portion G of the stem B.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which may come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore,desire to be limited in every instance to the construction herein shown and described. For example, I have shown a construction in Fig. 6 wherein the shank of the mandrel is slightly enlarged, as at G, near the head in order that the sleeve may engage with the same to hold the latter in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, a solid stem having a transverse integral head at the outer extremity thereof, an annulus of bristles surrounding said stem and abutting against saidhead in the direction of the length of the stem, and a sleeve extending over a portion only of said stem and engaging the same to-prevent movement and provided with a flange, the bristles being clamped between the head and flange.
