C. D. ROGERS.
.WIRE NAIL.v
10.364,4-39. Patentgd June 7,' 1887.
HI D r T N o E. m 2J @a 5 E vN// w( v I ZM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. ROGERS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAhID.
WIRE NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 364,439, dated June 7, 1387.
Application filed November 26, 1886. Serial No. 219,855. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vxfire Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in wire nails; and it consists, essentially, of a nail having a head, a roughened shank adjacent thereto, and a body portion having a series of concentric barb-like corrugations formed therein whose outer diameter is substantially the same as the normal diameter of the wire composing the nail, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The object of my improvement herewith is toproduce a superior wire nail of its class.
In the annexed sheet of dawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my iinprovedwire nail, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view' taken through the upper portion of the nail, and showing the roughened shank contiguous 1to thehead.
The following description refers more particularly to the novel features-of the improvement shown in the drawings.
A designates the-improved wire nail as a whole, as made from steel wire or other suitable metal.
a indicates the head thereof, the same being round and somewhat flattened, as usual.
s indicates the shank or plain portion, the same in diameter corresponding to the normal size of the wire or rod from which the nail is formed.
r designates a series of indentations formed in said shank, upon opposite sides thereof and adjacent to the head a.
c c indicate a series of barb-like concen trically-arran ged oorrugations formed upon the 5o iront or entering portion of the shank of the nail, each of said co'rrugations c being substantially an inverted truncated cone--that is to say, the basec of veach cone forms an abutment against the fibers of the wood when driven therein,to more eiiectually prevent the k withdrawal of the nail therefrom, the diameter of the said base c being practically the same as that of the normal size of the wire s. (See dotted lines). rlhe tip or front end ofthe nail terminates in the sharpened point p, all as clearly shown.
The manner of forming the corrugations c upon the nail is not deemed essential to this specification, as the same forms the subject of another application for United States Letters Patent, filed by me upon even date herewith. Serial No. 219,886. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rlhe improved wire nail hereinbefore described, the same consisting of ahead, a roughened shank portion adjacent to said head, aseries of concentrically-arranged inverted trun cated-cone-shaped corrugations whose diameter does not exceed that of the wire itself, formed upon the front portion of the stem or shank .and terminating in a sharpened point.
2. The wire nail A, of the class/specified, having the head a, ,the shank s, roughened at r adjacent to said head, and, further, having said shank provided with a series of concentric barb-like corrugations, c, whose greatest diameter is substantially the same as that of the wire composing the nail and terminating in a sharpened point, substantially as shown and hereinbefore set forth. E
3. Theimproved wire nail, hereinbefore described, consisting of a head, a roughened shank adjacent to the head, a shank having a series of circumferential barb-like corrugations formed thereon whose diameter does not exceed that of the normal size of the wire, and terminating in a sharpened point, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES D. ROGERS.
