TO 'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BARSTOW, of Chicago, in the countyof Cook, and `State of Illinois, have `invented a. new and improved Grater for Abrading Nutmegs and other substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others" skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', forming part of.this specification.'
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved nutmeg-gratter, with a removed section showing the interior parts.
Figure 2 is a section of the same through the line :c :11, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
This invention consists in placing the grater, A., Within a case, B, and supporting the said grater upon and secured t'o any suitable springs, 11, as shown. These springs rest on and are secured to the bottom of the` case, as shown, and may be of any suitable i'orm, asa straight or coiled spring, or they may bre of rubber.
In practice, two springs,as shown, are preferable, but more may be employed, if desired, or the grater may be'llingcd at one end, and the opposite end provided with a. yielding spring-action.-
The nutmeg or other substance to be grated is attached to the end of a wire or stem, m, which is secured i to a handle, D, asshown, the said wire passing through a vertical slot, d, in the case B. A hinged lid, H, completes the case, and prevents the escape of the grated particles, and also provides a. surface against which the nutmeg is made tovimpinge by the action ofthe springs b. But this lid may be dispensed withpfor, by pressingf the nutmeg down upon the grater, the abrasion of the former may be produced without permitting it to come in contact with the said lid. l i A horizontal opening or slot, n, as shown, at the end ofthe case, permits the discharge of the grated particles.
This invention provides a simple and effective household-implement, and is more easily operated than those,
heretofore used.
t is simple, small cost, and not liable to get out of repair.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- l. Supporting an abradingor grating-plate, A, uponone or more springs, '12, substantially as shown and described, in combination with the case B, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The stem or wire m, or other equivalent devicefor holding the nutmeg or article to be grated, substantially as shown and described, in combination with grater A, springs b, all as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY H. BARSTOW.
